im trying to turn a laptop hardrive into a spinning drink coaster for fun lol

anyways yeah I got a Seagate 2.5 40gb 5400rpm hdd

I had no use for it so I took off the case and I though it would be kinda funny to turn it into a spinning drink coaster the only thing is I have no clue how to power it without using a sata cord any ideas? all I want is to power the disc motor nothing else anyone know wich prong that is and a ghetto way to get it power by itself? via usb cord possibly?

The pinout of a sata connector is basically 5 pins, spread across 15 due to the wire/pin not being able to support the current needed. You should be able to solder wire directly to the control board, or split open a sata power cable and attach it there. Only problem you'll run into, 5400rpm is still extremely fast for a drink lol. You will want to get that down to 30-60rpm to prevent liquid from flying everywhere and I'm not sure where on the motor you would restrict that OR if it can even be restricted that slow.

Check this link for the pinout.

this is what im working with on the back of the disc drive there is 6 gold connectors I think specifically powers the hard drive motor

as u can see on the pcb board there are also 3 connectors im guessing that's where it connects the power from the sata connection to the actual motor so I was thinking I could just apply power straight to there.

and as for the 5400rpm ill deal with that later first I wanna get it spinning biggrin.gif

I think it will be pretty difficult to find a schematic for what connectors to use there. You will be better off powering the drive normally and using a multimeter to see which lead has current and testing direct connects at proper volts.

"spinning drink coaster"

THIS is not a good idea. Spinning drinks + table + next to electronics, computer hardware and your favorite keyboard = its not a good idea, a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

Instead. Why dont you just mod the HDD to a acrylic top with blue leds with some designs etched to it and then look up some schematics using google and use a USB cable to solder directly to the HDD internal power points and cable tie it inside and then power it from your computer, and then maybe put a tact switch in the center so when a glass full of your favorite beveridge placed on it, it will light/power/spin up, and when the glass is taken off it will not light up. This way you have a STATIONARY, Spinning glowing hard drive showing its internals while staying STATIONARY for your GLASS to be placed on top. Keep it simple, it may take you a few days of work but I am sure you can work something out.if you take your time, and dont forget to sleeve the USB cable to a nice Green, Blue or Orange color with some para cord.

Have you considered a clock? wink.gif I wouldn't worry about rotation speed too much. Yes, 5400 RPM is fast, but that motor was never spinning with a heavy drink and glass on it. I don't think it has the torque to handle it.
