EVGA GTX 670 Superclocked very low max boost, OC unstable @1150MHz - Page 2

I have 2x ASUS GTX 670 DC II 'Non TOP' running in SLI. One of my cards has a Kepler boost of 1124MHz. This card will overclock to almost 1300MHz, or a little above that if I remember correctly. The other one have a Kepler boost of 1084MHz and have a hard time doing anything above 1124MHz when overclocked. However, I don't care because I don't overclock them for regular use. They are fast enough for me. Only thing I do is set a fan profile to keep my upper card from going much past 70c at max load. Little overclocking headroom is no RMA reason. Also, if you are lucky enough to get one that will do 1300MHz + boost it will not make that big of a difference in games, when compared to stock.

This is why cards marketed for overclocking are bull. Just get the cheapest with the cooler you like and overclock yourself, it is always luck of the draw unless the chips are binned but I've never seen any proof of that.

In the case of GTX 670's I do not fully agree. Reference cooler for GTX 670 makes a terrible noise due to the fan being mounted in a plastic housing. At first I owned a MSI GTX 670 with the reference cooler. The humming noise from the fan almost drove me crazy. Also, it had alot of coil whine. Eventually I sold it and got these two ASUS GTX 670 DC II's (Non TOP). No humming noise from the fans and no coil whine. Very happy owner.

However, in most cases a reference cooler will be fine, but not for the GTX 670's. Also, when buying a certain card it's worth checking on the internet if other people are complaining on coil whine. GTX 670 reference are also known for it's coil whine, not just that annoying humming from the fan. GTX 680 reference on the other hand, is fine as far as I know.

That's why I said the cheapest with the cooler you like. Some people don't mind the noise of reference designs if they have loud ass case fans.

The coil whine is also a bit luck of draw, I owned a asus 670 dc2 and had coil whine while folding.

Just don't spend 100 euro extra on a card because it's overclocked and don't expect any card to reach at least clock X, you'll only be disappointed.

I agree with regards to not paying extra for just the overclock. I bought non TOP cards because I only cared about the cooling, got no Coil Whine in my two cards and they look good. Also, was about the same price as cards with reference design.

It is seeming to me that the only EVGA 670s that are worth the extra over vanilla are the FTW 2GB cards, due mainly to the 680 PCB. I don't know about the othermmanufacturer, iI've just been mentally keeping track of people's successwwith various EVGA models... I could certainly be wrong, but it seems to me that the FTW is what is most likely to give you everything you need to increase the probability of a strong clocking card...
