Black screen after adding 6GB more RAM.

Thread Starter
Hello people, I'll try to be brief. I looked for a RAM section for this but couldn't find one.

I just tried to add 6GB of THIS to a system that had 6GB of THIS.

Both sets work fine by themselves but when I try to boot up with 4, 5, or 6 sticks in, I just get a black screen before I even see the BIOS splash screen.

The PC is running, but nothing happens, no beeps or anything. The RAM is .04V off, and the CAS latency is off by one, but I had set the mobo CAS to 9 too allow them to work at the same time.

I've tried setting the board to defaults too, nothing. Bad slot is out of the question too because I've tried booting with 4 sticks 3 times, with the 4th in each of the 3 blue slots, same result.

OH, one more important thing. When I first put the RAM in and booted up, it got past BIOS but I got a blue screen immediately before windows booted. It automatically rebooted again and windows booted up fine, and was reading 12GB. I went to shut the PC down to overclock a bit more, and it blue screened, never to boot again with all the RAM, or even let me into BIOS.

If any of you gents have a suggestion here, I would be quite thrilled since I'm pulling hair over this one. By the way, I still have the same system listed in my profile, I've just been gone a while.

Thanks!

Hi.
Mixing sets of RAM with different operating voltages (GEIL->1.6v , Kingston->1.65v) is not suggested. Try to get a kit with 1.6v and 8-8-8-24.

So even though a set of RAM can be run at different voltages set through the BIOS, mixing two sets is a bad idea? Also it seems weird it started up once.... thanks for the reply.

Just wanted to add, I've run the 1.6V Gskill RAM at 1.64V for years, so didn't think adding 1.65V RAM would be an issue.

Well, mixing RAM with different operating voltages will give headaches.
Suggestions.
Set the timings for each individual stick at 8-8-8-27, 1.65v. See if it works.
Try mixing 2 sticks (1 of each set) first, at 1.65v.

The RAM mixes fine as long as I only use 3 sticks of whatever combo. After spending the last 4 hours trying every damn setting combination in the books I realized this POS board just isn't going to run 12 sticks of high performance RAM at tight timing and high voltage. I'm sending the RAM back. WIsh I bought a better board, and not just from this episode. Lesson learned.
