Possible Video Card Upgrade?

Thread Starter
Looking to upgrade my video card in the rig listed below or just add a 4870 or another 4870x2 to the mix. I've been looking at the 6000 and 7000 series cards but not sure that would be a good addition to my current rig.

What would be the best upgrade to my rig without bottlenecking the video card/cards?

Thanks

I'm assuming, since you have a 24" monitor, you game at 1920x1080, correct? We all know that at that resolution and higher the dependency is more on the GPU (generally speaking) versus the CPU (except for some games that are CPU dependent of course).

If so, since your chip is OCd you should be able to use even a 7970 with a minimal bottle neck. I'm speaking from owning a q6600 and using my current 7950 OCd (before I upgraded to my current rig) on it and there are going to be games which are CPU dependent where you will suffer lower minimum FPS.

To limit the bottle neck you can push your chip some more if you wish, but I believe it's already 5-10% faster than my old q6600 (clock for clock). I had my q6600 at 3.6Ghz and it ran my games fine. You're running your chip at 3.8 Ghz so you should get better FPS compared to my q6600.

For reference I played, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Crysis 1 and 2, Far Cry 3 on my q6600 together with my OCd 7950 and it played well on my 1920x1080 monitor.

Lastly, I wanted to add that I normally get consistent 60 FPS now with my i3770k but with my q6600 I would get dips in the 40- 45 FPS for the games I listed.

I would say 7870 or 7950, or if you need Cuda you may want to look at an GTX 660 ti.
