Radeon 7970, GTX 680 or 770? - Page 7

Love how people bash me for recommending the 770, yet all they do is recommend only the 7970. God forbid the op wants to play sky rim or fallout, he will be in a micro stutter mess.

God forbid the op wants to play any games with SSAA 2-4, like Metro Last Light or Crysis 3, he will be in a 20fps mess.

Uhh, that's been fixed for quite some time now... If this was a year ago I'd say otherwise but skyrim is smooth as butter now.

How so? I play crysis 3 maxed with SMAA x 2 and maintain 50-60 fps and my card does the same with metro.

Also the issue was not 100% fixed with AMD frame time, AMD admitted to this and have been promising a fix coming this summer. I can look up AMD saying this if you need me to. Also feel free to bench your 7970 against my 770 to prove to the OP which card is superior.

No disrespect guys they both great cards. I mean that, but I stand behind my recommendation. smile.gif

To remain completely fanboyless in this statement:

Don't get the GTX 680 out of those three choices. However, read this next part:

  • Do you plan on heavily overclocking it? I.e. searching for the max possible overclock on your card to get the best performance out of it possible?

If your answer is yes to this question: Get the HD 7970/7970Ghz Edition cards. It will run you on average around $375-380 in cost.

  • Do you plan on not heavily over-clocking (like you said you were only planning on maybe a 10% over clock)? I.e. not going all out in over-clocking?

If your answer is yes to this question: Get the GTX 770 (2GB or 4GB versions). It will run you on average around $400-450.

Both are great cards. Both have some ups, and both have some downs. If you do plan on going ape**** with over-clocking, then yes the 7970 will be the winner of the two. But if you plan on not going ape**** in over-clocking, the GTX 770 will give you the best performance for your $.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Many HD 7970/7970Ghz Edition cards are incapable of hitting over 1225 core, unlike what OCN would lead you to believe. High clocks are not the norm.
  • Most GTX 770s (so far as of writing this) are capable of hitting at a minimum 1275 core/~8000 mem, with a fairly large amount hitting higher.
  • Both will be basically overkill at 1080p, and both are still solid cards at higher resolutions (surround screen gaming, high resolution 1440/1600p gaming).

I'm here to help the OP, not getting into a benchmark throwdown thumb.gif

That said, as I said in my initial post both the 770 and 7970 are excellent choices.

And the fix you are referring to it for crossfire, single gpu has indeed been resolved.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/06/06/msi_n770_lightning_overclocking_review/3

My problems with this review are:

A) If HARDOCP were really looking to compare the best of each why did they not use the 680 Lightning(1392/1765) from an earlier review of theirs: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/07/30/msi_geforce_gtx_680_lightning_overclocking_redux/4#.UcHYiZydtD8

I believe a 680 Lightning clocked at 1392/1765 would have soundly defeated the 1275/6800 7970 in Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, and Far Cry. I don't think it would have beaten the 7970 in Tomb Raider but it would have been more competitve.

B) 1241/7800 is a rather low overclock for any 770. Most that I've seen can achieve 1300 on the core. I know of one 770 Lightning that is capable of 1400/2000 with voltage modification. I'm almost certain that with the same mod most if not all 770 Lightnings are capable of 1300+

C) A 7970 @ 1275/6800 that is game stable is a force to be reckon with however finding a sample that clocks this well is actually quite rare and I say this because I've owned quite a few -- only one of five was capable of reaching these clocks.
