Um... MSI has already launched their Gaming Series 770, and their Gaming Series 780 will be hitting stores soon.

Technically speaking, you're only 1 generation of architecture behind.

400-500: Fermi
600-700: Kepler
800: Maxwell (early 2014?)

Damn, this means no 670 refresh. Might have to try my luck with a 770 on a 400w PSU then. It is a good PSU though, ran 670 1200mhz without a sweat.

NVIDIA seems to have learned their lesson about making adjacent models too similar. The 670 sold ~30% more units than the 680, largely because the only difference between the two (except the $100 of MSRP) was +1 SMX cluster and +70 in clock speed. Why would they make the same mistake again with their new Kepler refreshes and leave profit on the table?

From a marketing point of view, each step between the 660 to the 780 does have a clearly defined benefit to justify moving up to the next tier instead of min-maxing at a given level (e.g. people buying 670s instead of 680s). To wit:

660 to 760 ($100 difference): +1 SMX, +8 ROPs, 256-bit memory controller
760 to 770 ($100 difference): +2 SMX, +60 clock speed, +1000 memory speed
770 to 780 ($250 difference): +4 SMX, +16 ROPs, +1GB VRAM, 384-bit memory controller

I was looking at the benchmarks for the 670 and 680 the other day and noticed how close the two performed. I thought it was odd.
