Weird login issue

Thread Starter
A weird issue popped on one of my older Windows machines last week. Every couple of days it starts up and stops at the login screen, just giving me the option of "other user" and I have to manually type in the username to get into the account. The only thing I did prior was a scheduled full system scan by Avast. I haven't found any decent tutorial on the net on how to fix this issue. All I'm seeing is random posts by people doing questionable stuff on a bunch of forums including Microsoft's forums.

I suggest that you try the steps listed in the "Answer" at this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/how-to-disable-other-users-option-from-windows-7/85c3394f-d117-457f-a046-270d85cf3082.  If that doesn't work, proceed with the suggestion posted down further on that page by RIP TORN.

If it still doesn't work, I can help you with carefully doing the registry edit.  This one looks legitimate to me (I understand what they are trying to accomplish with this registry edit): http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/182279-logon-screen-fix-showing-only-other-user-last-logged-user.html

All of those are already clear. Hence my frustration with these answers, if you could call them that. I did my due diligence and went through every little tutorial available to no avail. If this was a repeating issue, then I would see those to be fit to fix my issue. As this has happened only twice during a period of 10 days, it's clear that there is another underlying issue and not the ones highlighted in those threads you've linked to.

I've never used more than one bog standard account per Windows computer. The last time I created a secondary account was back in the early 2000s under Windows XP SP2. Which was a headache in itself and swore off of the stupid move since then.
