Actually, you touch upon a good point. SLI Titans (2x GPUs) does NOT have the grunt to effectively run 1600P Surround (don't know about 1440P Surround); it has enough VRAM (6GB), but not enough GPU power. It's a balance between enough GPU grunt and VRAM. That is why I suggested going with Tri-SLI Titan at a minimum if one is going with 1600P Surround.
On top of that, drivers and the games themselves have a lot to do with how well your GPUs scale and allow for smooth gameplay.
Tomb Raider, as shown in my previous post, scales beautifully, as does Hitman Absolution where I get over 120 FPS @ 5160x2560.
Other games, like Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 scale so horribly that I can't even play the game - I get around 25FPS since all GPUs are around 25 - 35% usage.
This is with an i7 3970X @ 4.8GHz as well - CPU bottle-necking should be eliminated.
If the question really came down to 2x Titans or 3x GTX-780s, I would ditch Surround and get one 30" monitor and 3x GTX-780s mainly for the GPU grunt (Framerate and pure graphics power). Yes, even with one 1600P monitor, some games use more than 3GB of VRAM but I would just turn down AA settings and be happy with a constant 60FPS locked (V-Sync) in ALL games all the time.
I get 115FPS with 4x GTX-Titan SC with everything maxed out (SMAA - 2x) in Crysis 3 on one 30" monitor @ 2560x1600. I can live with that.
Although, I have to say, after having 3 30" monitors in Surround, I will NEVER go back to just one monitor. Perhaps for my secondary system, I will get a single 4K monitor, but my main "Monster" "Uber Rig" will always be Surround. I wonder how much VRAM would be required, on top of the immense GPU power needed, to run 4K Surround @ at least 60Hz (120Hz 4K Surround would be surreal)!Edited by Baasha - 6/23/13 at 1:07pm
