Fixed the title for you... rolleyes.gif

PC games have never really been shareable or sellable, at least not the majority of them, not since gaming became a relevant topic in mainstream society.

That is why people are OK with steam and (to a lesser degree) origin, but are so upset about the same thing on consoles.

On PC it is the status quo. It would be nice if it changed, but no loss if it doesn't. On consoles, DRM and lack of ability to share/resell is a new thing that negatively changes the gaming landscape for the future.

PS - gamestop is bad for everyone. No one should defend it, it doesn't matter who you are. You get ripped off selling your used games, you get ripped off buying used games, and you get ripped off selling new games (as a publisher/developer). Nobody wins, ever.

In fact I only play SP on my PC games (like BF3 and COD) and hate having to have Steam and Origin to play my games. My problem is with people who have absolutely no problem with Steam (or in fact go on and on about how great it is) but act like holy hell has descended upon us because MS is trying to bring that same model to consoles. I don't personally think you should have to have internet to play a game but I also can see the way things are going and in 10-15 years there won't be any such thing as offline gaming anymore. Like I said, its just the hypocrisy that is aggravating me because I've argued against Steam for years and have always been amazed at how great people think it is but all of the sudden these same people are eviscerating XBO.

And btw, thank you for your service. I respect anyone who has served their country with honor...

You seem to be forgetting that games for the most part, are cheaper on steam and if you wait long enough and search around a bit, you can get huge discounts. Sony and MS (if they had some smarts) should sell the digital versions lower that the disc based option. It's crazy to pay $59.99 for a DL or disc version, most people will just get the disc. If they want to limit used games, offering new games cheaper on DL will entice lots of people to buy DL versions ala Steam.
Steam is thinking of trying out a new feature where you can lend your friends your games to try out. Not a bad idea or at least it's a step in the right direction.

One thing I haven't seen is, people need to think about what happens next. How long will "online support" happen for consoles. Traditionally a console has games made, that can just be played. That's the big kicker with consoles. Look at the SNES, N64, PSX, PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, Atari, Sega Saturn, traditional consoles have life beyond their date.

If I were to buy an old console for my kids (don't have them, nieces/nephews), what do I do when that life expectancy is gone? Will Microsoft keep those servers up till the dawn of time? I can buy used games, NES for example, and they still play today. So my question is, why stop that model? They could have easily done a disc model AND a digital model, while keeping an Offline possibility.

Something we should think about, how long our consoles last.

Exactly how I feel.

And I don't see why they threw a tantrum and took their toys home. If family share was to be more than a demo (the word going around now) why couldn't they offer a share option for digital purchases?

I don't think share ever was going to be what people thought it was and Microsoft is PO'd they didn't get to dictate over the people so they want folks to feel it was the vocal gamers that took something away that probably never existed in the form they thought it was in anyway.

That is not what I said. I said consumers allow the big names like EA to get away with modifying a title a little bit each year by continuing to buy. This is why I stopped buying PGA tour golf every year because I was paying good money for a slight rehash of the year before's game.

But back to your supposed point. Budget and advertising costs are in the millions and some in the tens of millions of dollars. You keep throwing around the $60 figure as pure profit and it's not. Do you really think places like Walmart and Best Buy are selling those games out of the goodness of their heart? They get a chunk too. Fact is we don't know how much money makes it back to the developer. All we do know is that we lose more and more of them every year due to inability to turn a profit. So you go right ahead and keep sending your money to Gamestop etc and we can continue to watch the game industry get smaller every year until it's virtually gone.

This isn't the consumers fault

I am a believer that If games were stop being Eye Porn with insane development cost's, using Hollywood actors and having a 2hr Hollywood movie campaign with tacked on multiplayer and just focused on being a fun game with some replay value, it would sell on its merits and wouldn't require massive advertising campaigns and unrealistic retail goals to break even or make a buck.

But instead of the content makers innovating themselves, they would rather take control of the market and punish consumers with more DRM and then start looking on what to blame next.

Are these Dev living that far below the poverty line that they feel the need to double dip? Sounds like hes just a little butt hurt now that he can't make money off of something he was never able to do in the first place.

Also people are saying that gamefly and rent-a-centers are taking money from the devs pocket, but unless gamefly has some awesome deal where they can get the games for pennies on the dollar, or they are stealing them, Then they are paying for the game, some where along the line the game has been bought and paid for full price, whether they bought it or someone else did. These devs need to their head out of their greedy a$$e$

If gamestop is putting a used copy of your game that they bought for $10 on the shelf next to a new copy of your game for $5 less than your new copy so that they can get 100% of the sales money, then no, you aren't getting paid for your games.

That's literally an institutionalised system to cut out the people who made the games from the profits of selling games....

Now tell me, should I pay a publisher of a book when I sell it to a friend? Should I pay an appliance manufacturer money when I sell an old blender at a yard sale? The only difference in these scenarios is that the book and blender cost more than 5% of the gross profits to manufacture and distribute.
