Am in a dilemmna right now. Microcenter has a great sale going on with these chips and I can't decide which one to get. I'm getting this for gaming and gaming only(Will upgrade GPU later in the year when Nvidia releases the 8xx series). I want something that can play games well now and for next gen. Which cpu should I get?
Also, which motherboard should I get if I want to be overclocking? Is the ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 a good choice?
In my opinion you need nothing more than a i5 3570k for gaming, I own one and love it. There are many review sites that concur (I can try to find a link if you want me to, or just go to google). The benefits of the i7 over the i5 is not worth it in terms of money spent (for gaming). The ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 is fine board. I owned it shortly and only upgraded because I needed a nicer board for different reasons. That board can overclock well and has won ASRock some respect recently, along with winning "best buys" on multiple computer sites.
Thanks for the reply. The thing is the difference between the two i5 and i7 bundles is 55 dollars. Is the i7 more future proof for gaming due to HT technology? That's where I'm stuck at
not much of a difference between ib and haswell right? and haswell's dont OC as well as IB from what I read. Any reason I should be looking at the haswell i5?

Again, my opinion, there is no reason to pay extra money for the Haswell, for gaming. I still think the 3570k is the sweet spot for gaming and overclocks well. If you do heavy editing, drafting, etc etc programs, thats where the i7 will pull ahead, but not for gaming.
ext4 over the G41 since you have decided to go with ivy.
the ext4 has voltage reading issues and VRM's can run hot but alot of people find it good. better that the G41 anyway, the lowest MSI board i would recommend is G55
This, but if you can afford the i7 I'd suggest to get a 4670k with newer instructions etc. But a 3570k works too, mine runs anything fine. It's only a bottleneck on BF3 and that's with two 7950's (running the i5 at stock)
I'm actually in the same boat (got a good deal on a Z77 board), but I might go i7 this time.
The difference in price at MC is only $60 between the two VS $100 everywhere else
Also since I'm not even going to consider upgrading again until Skylake, won't feel too bad about spending the smidge extra.
Also when you said sale, did you mean a MC sale, or as in their usual prices?
It's $190 for a 3570K and $250 for a 3770K right now in-store, at least that's what I'm seeing.
Only reason I ask is b/c they did a fire-sale last year with 2500Ks and were selling them for $100 a pop (would love to see that happen again w/ IB).
Even overclocking isn't as great as its prior gen, it's liberating to much heat requiring expensive cooler solutions which only drive your costs up and in comparison to prior gen in cost/performance benefit you get much more out of the prior gen but if you see a great deal on the 3770k do not hesitate just grab one without thinking like I did. I don't see that much gain from AVX instructions because it would be the case with ivy vs sandy which still remains constant at 5-10% performance difference. No reason why you should be looking at Haswell unless you just want to brag about having the latest.

Don't let that post scare you. Something is wrong if his 3570k is bottlenecking BF3, even at stock it should not. Infact, HT in BF3 (if you went with an i7) can actually have negative impacts on the game, especially with overclocking. I don't dip below 58-60 frames on my setup, usually a straight solid 60.

Great choice! hehehe *lookatmysig*
Tell us what you can run with it (the chip), I know it shouldn't have any factor but my 3570k uses a lot of voltage..
