How to hook up these 7950s to my GA-990FXA-UD5?

Edit: SOLVED, see full answer at end of post.

So I just picked up 4 x 7950s for my existing rig, and I'm a little confused as to how I'm going to hook them up to my motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5).

The board has 5 PCIe slots: 16x, 16x, 8x, 4x, 4x.

I plan on using powered risers, but I'm not sure which risers I need exactly. Is it as simple as using 8x to 16x risers? Can I use 1x to 16x risers in the 4x or 8x slots?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

just get 1x - 16x powered risers for the x8 and x4 slots, and get 16x - 16x powered for the 16x slots. There are no x8 or x4 powered risers (that I'm aware of, and I've worked with most of the factories that make the risers).

You then hook up the 4-pin molex connectors to your PSU's 4-pin molex connectors. Then you attach the powered risers to the appropriate slots, and you're done. It's not too hard.

And yes, it'd supply enough power. Really, the issue isn't too little power, but too much. If you use regular non-powered risers, each card can draw a small amount of power through the motherboard and 24-pin connector. More cards = more wattage = more risk of burning out the 24-pin connector (which can handle ~375w from all your GPUs, CPU, RAM, HDDs, and so on).

The molex connectors divert the power from going through the motherboard, directly to the PSU from the GPUs (like the PCI-E connectors you already are using).

Hopefully this explains everything. Just get 3, 1x - 16x powered risers, and 2, 16x - 16x, and you'll be fine.

I thought the UD5 only did 3-way CFX.

Unfortunately the ud5 only supports 3 way crossfire

Why would you go for four way sli if you don't even know how to connect them :|
You need a new board. There are no enough slots in that one.
OP may not be using xfire. Might be for folding, boinc or mining. Those do NOT need xfire but you can use as many GPUs as you can shove in the board.

Note that I picked up all 4 as part of a deal, it was 4 or nothing ($230 each @ 1 month's use, they are the Sapphire 4L model).

Afaik powered risers allow you to hook the cards up, I'm just not 100% clear as to how yet.
