Sorry for double post (mods, you may merge this post if you want) but I forgot to mention that ever since Zero Filling the drive, HDST Fitness Test no longer reports a "Read Element Failure" and instead reports it as Passing.

Have you tried to register it online and see if it may fall under warranty. Will also depend on if it was sold as a new drive and not used. I'd try anything I could for piece of mind. I recently lost over 3 years of digital comics due to just changing my drive letter. For some reason it messed up my drive and would never recognize it again.

I just did and it went through, except under the Expiration Date it says "Invalid Serial" and further says

"While the warranty Quick Check may show this hard drive has a valid warranty, NOT ALL WARRANTIES ARE TRANSFERABLE, therefore this Quick Check is not a guarantee of warranty entitlement."

That's pretty tragic to hear about your comics. I hope you're able to re-collect them all.

And yes it was sold as "NEW" on the ebay auction.

I checked today and it seems the HDD hasn't increased in any of the parameters after writing a good 800GB of data on it.

For Hitachi drives you have to use a different portion of the serial.

For example, my drive theoretically shows "JP2940HQ3TV6JH" but you would just put in "HQ3TV6JH"

I know it's been three months but let me just update this thread for informational purposes for anyone having similar concerns.

Since the time of these previous posts to now, the hard drive went from being completely empty to now having over 920 GB used. The SMART logs have not changed on CrystalDiskInfo and HD Tune Pro. The reallocated sector count and reallocated event count values have not changed. It seems the zero filling that I did using HD Tune Pro to mark the bad sectors before even beginning to use the HDD is keeping the bad sectors from being used and so far no new bad sectors or errors have shown up.
