Roomates with internet

Thread Starter
Hello readers, today I wanted to ask if it's possible to create (with the right parts) a PC router that splits the bandwidth of the full internet speed.

This is what I was thinking. Somehow create a PC with 1 LAN (IN) & 3 LAN (OUT). Configure the PC to send internet to those 3 LAN (OUT) to 3 routers in which will be at different rooms. Each LAN OUT's will have the bandwidth split 3/ of whatever it is. Can this be done , also what OS would I need with the networking ability?

Thanks

I believe you will only need a router with QOS (quality of service i believe). This can manage bandwidth to computers on its own.

This doesn't help. Since 3 of us torrent and have many devices connected.

It's only fair to split it. I want to know how this is possible?

Thanks

Clear OS is one that I've messed around with and it was pretty good for what you need: http://www.clearfoundation.com/Software/overview.html Brief thread about it here http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1670849

A list of other router OS's for your consideration:

That is what he said the router with the QOS router would do??

or get a managed switch..

QOS doesn't do much. If I download a file everyone around me gets min bandwidth like youtube videos taking longer to buffer.

Make it simple with the extra PC parts laying around. Create myself a router PC that splits everything so no one can complain...

I think his goal is to create a more "fair" bandwidth consumption between their service. I've tested some QoS on some routers and even on Asus's software but they aren't all too great. Having a constant division of bandwidth is a lot more reasonable when sharing between "rooomates" than family members.
A managed switch can do this because you can specify exactly how much each port can use. you divide your internet speed by 3 and apply this to the ports that are being used.

Untangle has a very powerful bandwidth control tool that can do this. Unfortunately, it's not included with the lite version.

This is a very Draconian approach. I know I would complain about this. I would suggest against a hard, persistent rate-limit. Instead, a more equitable approach would be to prioritize traffic and have your rate-limit triggered during times of congestion (e.g. real QoS). QoS can be very complicated and can be a pretty deep rabbit hole; however, there is no reason why one should not be allowed to exceed their bandwidth cap during periods when no one else is fully utilizing theirs. I understand that the QoS functionality of SOHO routers is limited, but perhaps the software suggested in this thread can help you achieve a more efficient and equitable distribution of resources.
