2GB Vs 4GB or 3GB Vs 6GB - Page 2

Thread Starter
Thanks for the replies guys. It does seem like this could never be proved right or wrong. The amount of VRAM is a debate I have had many times and feel that having owned 2x2GB 680 Lightnings and gaming at 5760x1080, that 2GB was plenty for the amount of horsepower needed. Adding a third lightning would have been a bad idea, as I would then have the grunt in tri SLI scaling games but not the VRAM in some games (Crysis 3 has great Triple card scaling).

So when considering to get 3gb 7970 or 2gb gtx 770 i shouldn't take the ammount of Vram into consideration? Because that's one of the main reasons im currently getting 3gb 7970 over 2 gb 770 (playing 1080p and also i want to mod gta 4 for enb and textures)

@ 1080p, buy the 770 2Gb. It will handle your GTA IV mods easily thumb.gif

Actually, if you have no plans to upgrade to a larger resolution, I recommend you buy a 7950 Boost Edition for $300...Now you'll have 3Gb + OC capabilities to match a 7970 thumb.gif

My point was that the different cards are completely different in how they utilize VRAM, so I would not buy a 7970 based solely on it having 3GB VRAM.

I also have 2x 680 Lightnings, and I have used them with my 1440p monitors with zero issues. The thing that consumes memory more than anything else is AA, and at 1440p I have never noticed the difference between 4x and 8x MSAA, and I can't usually tell the difference between 2 and 4. In fact, the amount of VRAM used is almost identical between 1080p 4xMSAA and 1440p 2xMSAA. I actually use less VRAM with FXAA @ 144p than I do with 1080p and 2xMSAA.

GPU power is far and away the most critical thing. VRAM only matters in very specific circumstances. Basically, you either have enough or you don't. There's no real benefit from having 4GB if you never surpass 1.6GB.

Yea in estonia, where i live a 7970 duall x sapphire(unlocked voltage) 3gb is 366€ and a 2gb gtx 770 gigabyte WF x3 is 400 € so im still between the two of them , i want to play gta 4 with mods and no lagg but i also want to play other good games like bf4 in the future. Something tells me bf4 will run better on amd because of they had 2x 7970s in E3 alpha pcs and new consoles will feature AMD. But will a 7970 handle gta iv mods good too, because people say gta 4 runs bad on amd cards anyways.

DAMN, this choise is difficult to make, i want the card to be as future proof as possible.

So many people on here defend the 2gb scenario and many defend the 3gb scenario. I read one and think, yes he is right, then later on, i think he or she is right.

Dam it, just go for 3gb and feel safe in your own mind and forget what anybody tells you and gta 4, 5, 6, 7 will always gobble up everything memory as well redface.gif

if the price is the same or near about, it feels more satisfying that you got an extra gb thumb.gif
