GPUs in a Mac Pro

Thread Starter
How many GPUs can I put in my Mac Pro. If possible I am wanting to put a secondary one in my computer.
Depends on what GPU you already have in there and which Mac Pro you have.

A 2nd GPU can be used for display outputs and secondary rendering, but cannot be used in CFX or SLI (as Mac OS doesn't support multi-gpu configurations like that)

If you have a 5870 or a 5770 you should be ok for placing a 2nd one in thumb.gif

I was going to say the same thing. It also depends on the height of your cards for how many you can put in there.

ok. Thanks very much!biggrinsmiley.gif

If all you have in there now is a single card, the thing you need to look at is power supply: Do you have one or two cables running into the card. If one, you can put a single additional card in there that requires a single 6 pin connection and be fine - provided you have drivers. If your current card is using both, then you are out of luck unless you have a card that does not need additional power connections, or add a secondary PSU.

Power is a good point. Make sure you have the connections for them on the logic board. Most newer Mac Pros have 4 of them I think. (don't quote me on that.) Have fun! thumb.gif

Nope: 2 tops. And they are both run through the main board, so I can't recommend doing a 6 to 8 pin adaptor either in most cases for worry that the traces will burn your board should they try and draw much more than 75 watts (I imagine there is a safty factor, but, do you want to risk that? smile.gif ).
