Any AAA title that has been out has not been solely GPU dependent and relied a lot on the CPU also. If you want to turn all the options on, and max everything out, you are going to need to eliminate bottlenecks. You are going to need a nice CPU that will help even out the work load. The only one misleading the OP is you, trying to make him think that he should throw a powerful GPU on his 955 when he would benefit most from a decent i5 setup first and then a GPU upgrade later.
After reading through more of these last couple of pages, your AMD fanboyism is shining brightly, it's clear as day. However, fanboyism does not befuddle the facts. Which are, you are getting more for your money by
1) Going to at least an 1155 chipset and CPU
2) A 955 will bottleneck a decent GPU no matter how you cut it (get over it)
3) An i7 920, unless you are getting some crazy deal, is going to end up costing you as much as an 1155 setup
4) going with an FX6300 is plain idiotic with the prices of 1155.
What I'm also noticing is that a lot of you seem to be confused about his i7 920 dilemma. He doesn't own a 920, he is thinking about buying one. Which means he also has to buy a motherboard for it too. These x58 motherboards are still selling, at least the good ones, for a decent amount of money. You can get a 2500k or 3570k for $170 USD used now, sometimes even less. A decent 1155 motherboard shouldn't cost you more than $150. Going any other route would be pointless. The only better route you could go is Haswell, but OP has already stated he isn't interested in Haswell.
So much contradicting information in this thread, instead of giving OP the facts, people are dissuading him from the facts with their own opinions and biased suggestions. People keep forgetting about maximizing other peoples' money, and giving them something that is worth their money instead of just doing something that they think they should do because they have tendentious beliefs.Edited by BiG StroOnZ - 6/23/13 at 12:22pm
