Looking For First SSD.

Thread Starter
Hi will be looking to purchase an SSD for my rig as i feel the mech HD is the main bottleneck for me now. I have waited until the 200+Gb models come down to a "reasonable" price before purchasing as i feel the small models would be over burdoned.

I have had a look and spotted:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BKWQMJU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

And:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Series-256GB-Solid-State/dp/B009LI7CTY/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Have my eye on the Toshiba but have upto £190/£200 at a push. And want a 256Gb model as a MINIMUM.

Also i have a new instal of Windows 8 Pro (i know....rolleyes.gifbiggrin.gif). And a mech HD set to IDE Mode in my BIOS. How easy would it be for me to transfer this "image" to the SSD AND to switch it to AHCI (faster?) in the BIOS without "bad" things happening.

Thanx.

My suggestions would be:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SDSSDHP-256G-G25-256GB-Ultra-Internal/dp/B0093HMLAS/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plextor-PX-256M5S-256GB-Series-Internal/dp/B008PO56PM/

A tad cheaper and great performance and reliability.

Thanx.

Usually there's some sort of registry change to fix BSODs when changing to AHCI.

For Win8 it looks like it's under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci and there should be an 'Error Control' entry to change to 0.

You could probably test this with your current drive as it should exhibit the same behavior (and might give you some slight performance benefit in the meantime to enable features such as NCQ).

Almost every SSD maker have some kind of Kit , some especially for laptops and some for desktops, should work great thumb.gif

regarding ACHI vs ide, it just gives you the ability to hot swap and a slightly speed increase, although on mech drives the rpm wont never reach that increase and you have to raid SSD to get improvements.. you could read more here

Yea that one's pretty good and the newer batches got improved NAND which gives slight performance increase over those you can find in the reviews.
