e6400 questions

Thread Starter
I'm running C2D e6400 on an ASUS P5B. Currently awaiting a new CPU cooler (Thermaltake Polo 735 Rev.2 (I was happy with the performance of the Venus on my AMD Athlon 64 3700+)). I hate the heatpipe system of my current cooler, this cooler I'm running right now is horrible (Thermaltake Beetle, buy it for looks, not for performance).

Stock frequency is 266. I hit a wall at 305. I received a boost of about 300MHz. I believe the reason my system becomes unstable beyond 305 is because of overheating issues.

I ran torture tests and watched my CPU temp quickly climb to nearly 60C. I believe my system is set up to shut down if the CPU breeches that 60C mark.

So would upgrading my CPU cooler enable me to overclock further?

Also, I have never messed with overclocking RAM before. Could someone spell it out for me? I read the guide, but I'd like a few more details. Here's the RAM I'm using: OCZ Dual Channel Special Ops XTC 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB)
Memory CAS Latency: 4-4-4-12

Alright the first minor issue I see is that you're using a vanilla P5B. The P5B is not know for reaching high FSB. The P5B-E and P5B Deluxe are the ones who tend to reach 400+ FSB. Have you tried raising your northbridge voltage? You may also need some ram voltage (vdimm) and cpu voltage (vcore) to overclock higher.

You definitely need a better cooler. 60 C at that overclock isn't good at all. If you keep the chip cooler, you may be able to get a higher overclock. How are your northbridge temperatures?

Your RAM is rated at 667mhz (333 FSB at 1:1). What is your RAM ratio right now? If you're pushing your RAM higher than your CPU FSB, you may be hitting a wall on the RAM. Try raising the RAM timings to 5-5-5-15.

I doubt temps are limiting your overclock. I've had my E6400 with the stock cooler at 3.3GHz and 80C under TAT but perfectly stable with Stress Prime 2004. I've since backed off because that is too hot, but 60C is nothing to worry about and shouldn't cause stability problems.

As bigval said, back off on the RAM timings and consider giving it more voltage. 2.0V is usually safe and decent amount above stock.

Okay, thanks for the info.

As of yet, I haven't touched any settings for the RAM. They are still at factory defaults.

The only reason I believe 60C is a problem is because whenever my CPU reaches 60C, my system shuts down (obviously a saftey feature).

I reset my CPU freq. to 266 because my system kept restarting during heavy load. I'm giong to wait for a better cooler before I start OCing.

According to CPU-Z, my FSBRAM ratio was 1:1 when I got my CPU freq. to 310 (but I experienced overheating) and RAM CAS latency was set to factory defaults (4-4-4-12).

Currently, my FSBRAM ratio is 4:5, CPU freq. is set to factory default (266) and RAM CAS latency is set to factory defaults (4-4-4-12).

Like I said, I have never messed with OCing RAM, and I would like to know more about it. I pumped a couple hundred bucks on these modules, and don't really want to fry em. What's safe, what's not?

Well the temps, even though they're not that high, could be having an affect on the processor meeting timing. Try upping the core voltage a notch.

I set the threshold to 75C. I'm not going to run my CPU at 75C, I just set it at 75 so I'd have some breathing room when messing with freq. At 305, it runs at 60C load.

Last night, I was running at 305 stable. I started memtest before I went to bed.

Memtest found one error. Not quite sure what this information means, but I'll post it in a little bit.

This morning I shut down my system and had to attend a funeral. Got back from the funeral, powered up, and Windows wouldn't load. It would go through regular boot sequence, but the system would restart after the Windows XP boot screen.

I went in to BIOS and set CPU freq. back to default (266) and other settings back to default. Windows loads fine now.

Why would my system run fine at 305 last night, but won't today? Any ideas?

Because it is colder outside at night and either you turn your heat down at night or your PC is a ways away from the thermostat and the room gets slightly cooler the colder it gets outside.

My comment had nothing to do with a 75C threshold.. so not sure what you are talking about....

Just try adding more core voltage and/or DDR voltage. These are the most common things to do if you've hit a stability wall. Your temps are fine and you should be able to try these increases safely.

Hey diyerxa, I'm hitting the wall at 380 with a value kit DDR2 533 overclock to 780Mhz on the rams! This rams is rated at 1.8v but in order to boot to window it need 2.1v on Vdimm. My cpu is clocked at 2.66GHz (not stable) due to limitation of the rams. i also loosen the timing from 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-15 to get it to post/boot. 2.45GHz is perfectly stable i only wish i have better rams, DDR2 800
