simply amazing and stupefying at the same time..
no... it's not that you CANT OC Kepler... and anyone claiming that doesn't know what they're talking about.
The issue with the 6xx series was 2 fold.
either 1) the card was voltage locked or 2) the gpu was factory overclocked pretty much to its limits already (like for the 660ti)...
all Kepler cards were voltage locked most people just dismissed the 6xx series as poor overclockers (throw in the fact clock for clock at the same speeds, the 7xxx series was faster across the board, which means a small overclock on a 7xxx will yeild a lot more performance then a huge overclock on a kepler). When you consider pretty much all of the gpus in the 7xxx series had a lot of overclock headroom, and some nice performance gains to show for even small overclocks, and many of them were voltage unlocked (on a case by case basis) or easily unlocked (on a case by case basis) the feeling was the HD 7xxx series was a much better overclocker then the 6xx series (and generally this was in fact the case).
As we can see on these benches a basically stock 7970 GE (that OC is pathetic... not sure why they bothered, unless they got a lame gpu there is a lot more you can squeeze out of one) is a toe to toe performer with the very high overclocked 770... and about 5% off the pace of a stock 780 (which i might add was about the difference between a 670 and 680)... That was a bit surprising to me, as i know from experience that there is a lot more overclock headroom in most 7970GE cards.... where as that 770 is OC'ed through the wall.Edited by azanimefan - 6/22/13 at 4:07pm
