Project Lackadaisical - The Worst Build Log on OCN - Page 5

These case is here biggrin.gif

Forewarning: No, I do not care if the pictures are crappy, they are still better than Dman's pictures.

Packaging

First impressions: It's in a cardboard box, smaller than I imagined (a good thing)

Inside the box you find.........a black bag.

Upon removing the packaging from the bag, you're left with a cardboard box, unfortunately it's slightly too small for a cardboard fort/ house, but I won't take any marks off for that.

The foam packaging is that really annoying "oh no, please don't snap when I take it out the box, it's really annoying to clean up" type, not a problem since the foam is fairly thick, about 3/5ths of the width of a Zippo lighter, rulers are for time-wasters!

The case itself comes in a protective material bag, it measures around 1 and 1/3 Portal guns squared, which means you could use it as a fairly serviceable cape.

Moving on we have the case itself, smaller than anticipated, which I'm pleased about, means there is more room for stuff on my desk like.......air.

Bottom view:

Here we have the right side panel from the 540 (left) next to the same side panel from the HAF-X (right), as you can see, it's a fair deal smaller and it's a lot lighter, which makes the case easier to move around, but not as much of an effective weapon were you to be accosted at a LAN party for killing someone as a Pyro.

Removing the top and front panels is easy, especially when you have one of these:

To remove the top panel, it's pretty much the same as on the Fractal Arc Midi, two thumb-screws at the back, and it slides off

The front panel is only removable from the case once the top panel is taken off due to the presence of these clips

However the top panel doesn't actually overlap the front panel, so in theory you could break those clips off and the front panel would be removable without taking the top panel off, just by lifting the front panel up, however I'm not going to try it, because I like breaking as little as possible on a new case. If you do try it however, I won't be held responsible for you breaking your case. thumb.gif

Under the front panel you can see the dust filter, which is held in place by magnets (how do they work?). Easy to remove and install, good job Corsair.

Accessories

Corsair includes a little cardboard box in one of the removable HDD trays, let's see what's inside

Inside is a plastic bag.

Inside in the plastic bag we have:

6x small zip-ties

8x very small screws

10x small screws (motherboard mounting)

22x bigger screws (fan mounting)

and 1x social outcast of a motherboard standoff (all of his other friends got invited to the party on the motherboard tray)

The cardboard box included is unfortunately too small to work as a serviceable glove, but again, wouldn't really be fair to deduct points for that.

Installing some stuff

Now to see how we install a HDD

Grab HDD

Grab HDD tray

Put HDD in HDD tray, put both things back in case.

Simples.

Now to mount an SSD:

Take SSD

Push into SSD bay

Simples.

The SSD is held in place by a bendy plastic piece and a clip in the front, to take the SSD out you just push the clip up and the SSD springs out, with enough force to go through a car door.

Not really, but words are fun.

Next, to install a 5.25” device.

In this case I'll be using the Blu-Ray writer/ reader (because it's less work than a fan controller)

The Air 540 has these plastic drive bay covers, so to install the device, you'll need to remove one.

To do this, there are two options.

Option A:

Option B:

Press the clip at the bottom or top and the cover should come out.

Now, to install the 5.25” device...

Grab the device

Flip this clip underneath the drive bays down

Slide the device in and flip the clip back up to hold it in place.

Simples.

I think that might be it for the overview, time to build the rig!

Updates with everything installed will come later today.

Maybe.

Even though you said all joking aside, I'm still skeptical because it's you. biggrin.gif

Thanks though, but I might wait until more zip-ties arrive, not happy with the cable management, especially in the right chamber.

For now you'll have to put up with this, I'll add more pics later when there's less ambient light.
