Is my Conroe slow? - Page 2

Are you sure its the processor. It could be the hard drive or something too, as unlikely as you might think it is. Is your hard drive SATA or IDE. IDE hard drives don't work well at all on the Jmicron controller, and since you have an IDE DVD RW it would automatically be slowed to the speed of that which is often only ATA-66. This could be a possible hinder for performance, as I can't really see how it can be the processor to be honest.

Well sadly doesn't solve your problem since your hard drive is SATA. But if your hard drive was sharing the same cable (since Intel chipsets nowadays don't have anymore than one IDE connector on the motherboard)it would automatically run at the speed of the slowest device on that cable which would be the DVD-RW. Often this speed is either ATA-33 or ATA-66 which is quite significantly slower than the normal hard drive speed of ATA-133.

the sataII cable is connected directly from the mobo to the hdd, the cd drive is connected directly from mobo, no secondary cables connected between the 2 drives.

Do you edit video directly from your CD/DVD Rom, or do you copy the material to the HDD first?

From experience, it's always a good idea to copy the material you want to edit/re-encode to the HDD first.

I've never heard of a "slower-than-normal" processor before, especially when you're talking about the fastest processors on the makret right now. Intel are known to be fast video encoders too. The throttle comes to mind, but Intel also drop the multiplier when it's trying to save power/idleing.

well, for media's that come from dvd or cds, i of course copy it to the hdd and then start editing and encodeing it.

as for the power saving, i turned it off (c2e) so multipler stays at 7X.

Your hard drive shouldn't be slow. Do you have any other peripherals connected that could be broken and are hogging system resources? What do you have plugged into PCI bus or USB ports?

My CPU throttles at 85C so that's not the issue.

Take a look at how your machine performs while it is starting up. If your machine starts normally then we know it's something at the application layer. At that point (or sooner) take a look at Task Manager to see how your resources are being used. I've done this before to discover apps or processes killing my performance.
