Would RAID 5 or 10 be better for my setup?

Thread Starter
So I have a WD5000AADS (Western Digital green 500GB) in my pc at the moment, and I have a slowly but surely dying Western Digital Raptor boot drive in my pc also. Along with that, I'm also starting to run out of storage room. So instead of replacing both drives, I thought it would be cool and extremely beneficial to run a RAID setup using 4 500GB greens in RAID 10 while getting an SSD for Windows. Then I had another idea, which was forgetting about the SSD and setting up 5 500GB greens in RAID 5.

I know about both modes and their ups and downs, but RAID 5 in this scenario is a little more appealing to me. I know it's "impractical" for daily use, but I get an extra terrabyte and (from my understanding) better read times, which is much more important to me than write time. And, I save money not having to buy an SSD (these 500GB greens are fairly cheap on ebay).

However, I want to know what you all think would the better RAID array in this situation. I'm really picky on read times more than write, and my raptor is failing to do both at a good pace now. And of course, storage. Raid 5 is appealing to me more because I get 2TB vs. 1TB+~60GB for windows.

I know this kind of setup is probably a little strange, but it's something I've always wanted to do, and now I have a chance to do so. I have an MSI X58A-GD45 and both modes of raid are natively supported on the RAID controller for anyone who was wondering

greens are bad for RAID

Get a 128GB SSD for OS and a WD10EZEX or two or 3 for storage. I'll be doing benches of them in RAID 5 and 10 on Z68 soon as I finish my RAID 0 benches.

Wonder if Intel has improved their RAID5 implementation. Last I saw benchmarks of it, it was pretty bad. Can't really think of a good excuse for it, too, since Linux software RAID utilizing the exact same ports works much faster.

I'd really love to see multi-SSD RAID0 scaling benches on the newer Z87 boards. I've been looking at the product data sheets and according to Intel, DMI 2.0 is only good for 2.0GB/s (20Gb/s with 8bit/10bit encoding). That's bandwidth shared among the 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports, USB 2.0/3.0 ports and up to 8 PCIe lanes.

Well, Lord Xeb has a RAID 5 on Z68 i think with a few drives and it works fast enough for him. I'll have benches up with RAID 5 on Z68 here soon: http://www.overclock.net/t/1403316/benches-4x-wd10ezexs-raid-0

Someone had some samsungs in raid 0 i think, check the resent posts in the samsung thread or the AS SSD thread. I'd do it if i had multiple SSDs and a new mobo to bench with lol.

Here maybe? http://www.overclock.net/t/754763/as-ssd-benchmark-thread/3050#post_20238397

I would never use onboard parity RAID unless it's a server. It's painfully slow, and takes a lot of CPU overhea.

Also, Green is a vvery poor drivein RAID. I hhighly recommend the new WD10EZEX Blue 1TB. $50-65 each.

Would a RAID 0 be a good idea for this setup? This isn't a work pc, there's really no files I absolutely have to have, it would just be irritating having to reinstalll windows (which I have to do soon anyways). I've never had a WD drive die except for an 80gb IDE that my brother dropped or hit or did some kind of physical damage that made the drive fail, and this was a drive that was in my family (it was my dad's at first) for 9 years and only died last year making the drive 10 years old. Also, I'm buying used drives that are guaranteed to work that are no more than 3 to 4 years old (mine is from 2010). The only reason my raptor is dying is because it was literally worked to death in a Dell workstation nearly all its life. It may be slow, but it still does it's job (I think it's from either 2006 or 2007 too, I can't check right now).

EDIT: still don't know when it's from, but it has 22.6k hours on it
