Is Micro-stutter an Overrated Fuss with 7950 / 7970 Crossfire?

Thread Starter
I'm asking this question because I'm considering to go back to AMD and try Crossfire for the 1st time. I'm very impressed with Crossfire scaling performance but what has always worried me was this germ called "micro-stutter." I've heard AMD suppose to release a driver specifically for the Crossfire. I've read from some that they have not experience this problem and others would say it's there. Honestly, I can't tell who's lying or telling the truth because of all this flame-war going back & forward. So please help me understand by clearing some things up about AMD Crossfire stability. Is micro-stutter overrated when running Crossfire?

I had crossfire 6950, played ~2days, noticed something weird, removed one card, noticed that it felt exactly the same than playing with crossfire. Fraps did say double fps when using crossfire.

I was confused, until now. http://www.pcper.com/search/node/frame%20rating The worst Crossfire problem is that for some reason every other frame is very very small (can't see it with your eye, but the fraps still thinks it was a frame). Basically this means that playing with crossfire looks the same as playing with Single GPU.

AMD has a fix coming, someday during the summer. Wait for it to get benchmarked before buying.

I have herd crossfire on lower end cards can be worse so I cant comment on the 7950/7970, but I was running dual XFX 7870s in crossfire and the fraps fps would be high but the frame times where HORRIBLE.

Just like fasti said some frames will be 4-5ms and others 30-40ms

My opinion I cannot recommend crossfire the micro stutter for me was unbearable. So I am selling my two 7870s, and ordered a EVGA GTX 780 ACX last week. should be here Tuesday.

I'll throw my cards back in and show you some frame times, Keep in mind the stutter CAN be helped with RadeonPRO but for me it wasn't worth the hassle IMO.

At this point, microstutter is really bad with the 6xxx series, it isn't so much on the 7 series, and a few simple fixes can almost completely eliminate it even on 6 series cards.

Yes and no. Depends who your listening too and what games your playing . I have 130 games and running crossfire 7970's. Out of the box i had poor performance, i installed the same bios on both cards, turned off vsync and updated drivers to 13.5 that helped scaling, they both have identical gpu usage. 3 games i play of the 130 are unplayable. fc3, ac3, and test drive ferrari. Everything else runs flawlessly bf3, blops2 etc etc @ 2560x1440p. A fix is coming, if you want sheer power i recommend the 7970's. 30% + performance of the titan at a fraction of the price. If you want the easiest experience, while having to turn down aa in some games and you have the money to burn then go the titan.

It is very dependant on the individual.

For me, two 7970Ghz Lightnings were so bad that I got migraines, while my friend never noticed anythin.
Even one wwould give me headaches.

Two 680 Lightnings don't have the same issue at all. Smooth as can be.

I have no history of motion induced sickness or epilepsy, so it's hard to predict who it will affect.
