need laptop for school

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy a laptop for school. My budget is $500-600 canadian dollars.

I have never really used a laptop before and know very, very little about laptops, so I don't know where to start or what is even good.
Any tips?

What is your maximum budget?
What country are you in?
What will be the uses of this laptop?
Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
What screen size do you require?
What screen resolution do you require?
Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
What operating system do you need? (if any)
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
How much hard drive space do you need?
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Is there anything else we need to know?

You should copy and paste the answers to these into your post to make it easier for people to help you.

For 600 dollars not including taxes you can get a laptop with a 1TB HDD, 8GB of RAM and a quad-core AMD A10 or dual-core Intel i5 CPU (though there was a special with an i7 recently which you just missed) usually with Windows 8, which takes some getting used to if you're on 7 but it's not terrible. At similar price points the AMD option usually has better GPU performance whereas Intel usually has the better CPU performance (though there are exceptions if you don't need so much RAM/HDD space).

We need to know your needs and planned uses before we can recommend anything - what kind of programs are you planning to run for school (office, watching videos, e-mail etc. or something more serious like video editing or CAD in which case there may not even be a good laptop choice within your budget).

Well, I think so.
AMD laptops use an APU, and it has a powerful IGP to withstand some games at decent settings.

AMD Desktop doesn't have an IGP, but I do think their APU are still powerful not sure if their APU use IGP or not.

Anyway, back to your question.
Considering you don't do anything that is gaming then Intel laptop is perfect for you.

By the way, can you answer this question for me.

Are you going to be using the laptop as "stationary" or "mobile"? As in are you going to get a laptop to replace your desktop (17.3) or grab a mobile laptop (11" to 15.6")

Wouldn't an A8 Processor fit his needs? Even an A6 TBH. Would run him about $380 USD.

Well, you forgot he lives in Canada not US.
I don't know about the money between Canada and US.

Yeah, A8-4500m is great, but I think i5 ivy bridge is a lot better and much faster than A8-4500m.
Even though A8-4500m has a great IGP but it can't beat the i5 CPU speed.
Not to mention, he's mostly be doing basic tasks such as emails, YouTubes, surfing, streaming and etc.

He's not going to do any gaming so what's the point?
Then again, it's up to him.

Because it will be cheaper still then the intel LOL
