A friend's problem

A friend of mine is having a problem with his rig. I have tried to help, but I think his problem is a little out of my reach now. I'll quote our conversation so you guys can see exactly what's going on.

As I told you i'm getting **** fps with a pc that should run way better. I'll be posting my specs so you can maybe help me. Posting it here for anyone else with the same problem, which i think is pretty rare.

Windos XP Pro
Amd Athlon 64 X2 4800+ , 2400 MHz
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
2048 MB DDR
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX ( ASUS )
Forceware 93.71

Socket 939 right?
Have you messed around in the bios?

Accidently mess up your memory timings?

That's a good chip, runs well on that motherboard. Did you install the motherboard drivers? Did you forget to reformat your hd once you bought the rig? You need to start fresh.

Have you messed around in the bios? Nope, and to make sure i did set default

Did you forget to reformat your hd once you bought the rig? You need to start fresh. I formated my old C drive that ran windows, i kept the other drives.

Right now I am thinking it could be a virus. Press ctrl alt del and see if any processes are using much CPU load or memory when you are idle. Also download SuperPi. Calculate 4M digits, tell me how long it takes.

Press ctrl alt del and see if any processes are using much CPU load or memory when you are idle.

Okay, Processes : 34, CPU usage is always around 16, but does go to 20 from time to time or 10.
The idle process is around 99 though.

Also download SuperPi.
Calculate 4M digits, tell me how long it takes.

I told it too travis to after i did superpi and he freaked out Very Happy here it comes .............. 4M : 06 M 44 sec.

I guess this means its a CPU problem Very Happy I hope you have a solution for this or maybe its going to end up in buying a new one Sad
Please give me more advice and thanks a lot, because now I atleast know the cause.

Also, runing speedfan the temp is around 50, but if i run 4M of superpi it doesnt go up AT ALL.

6 MIN! HAHAHA

calming down now...

now we need to figure out whether it is your CPU or Motherboard. I am not positive, but I think it could also possibly be your RAM. Let me ask the fools at overclock.net.

I want you to try something for me. Go into the bios. Go to the advanced tab.

CPU config > DRAM something > take it off auto and put it on manual.
Take the clock speed down from 400? Make it like 266.

Take the first 4 numbers and raise them 1 setting. They are memory timings. For example, if CAS is 2.5 make it 3... or whatever the next higher number is. Do that for the first 4 timings. Then at the bottom, if you are running 2 sticks of memory, set it to 1T. If you are running 1 stick of memory, set it to 2T. It will probably be set at 2T originally fyi.

Then boot and run super pi again
If superpi takes a lot less time, it's your memory. If not, it's either your CPU or Mobo... or still possibly your memory. LOL right?

If it doesn't boot, who gives a ****. Just reload the defaults.
What are you guys thinking?

Is Cool & Quiet disabled in his bios? Have the AMD dual-core optimzers been downloaded and installed? Has the Windows Dual-Core hotfix been downloaded and installed?

These are places I would think might be causing a decreased performance in benchmarking and general applications.

Hmm... Really? It's probably a windows thing since if he had hardware trouble, it probably would've just failed outright. I'd just reinstall windows again and make sure everything is updated and things like that.
