DVD drive faceplate mod

I didn't like the look of the DVD drive in my army green Corsair C70 so.....knowing that DVD drives are cheap (if I completely ruin it), I went to a local hardware store with a drive bay cover from my case - they scanned it, and mixed me a little tester jar of matching paint. It ran me about $4 for the paint. The majority of the time I spent was allowing paint to dry - I estimate it was probably only an hour or so of work.

Here is what I did-

How my non-matching DVD drive looked at the start (sweet ASUS logo, yes?):

The paint I bought, eggshell finish (fairly good match):

Remove the tray faceplate first - it has a couple little tabs on the bottom that when pulled back allow it to be slid up and off the tray. For the faceplate itself, I had to release the obvious tabs (circled) and a third one not seen here- plus one more tiny tab I thought I was going to break on the thin section above the drive tray opening that was hidden (and sucked):

Nothing broken. Finally apart and ready to roll:

I hand painted it carefully. At first I tried taping off the eject button, but it was a nightmare so I just went for it. It took several coats, and not painting over the clear window for the activity indicator or the eject button was a PITA. I wet sanded with 600 grit paper a couple times to smooth it out a little.

And BAM! - all back together. Works just like before. Woot!

The paint finish is a little off - maybe a clear coat (satin?) would make it match slightly better. Any thoughts?

Overall it wasn't too tough a mod, and I think it came out pretty awesome. If you have an optical drive that sticks out like a sore thumb, I say go for it!

That is a good idea! I like this a lot, good job man. I don't have that case, but I don't even use a DVD drive anymore cool.gif

That does look good, but have you considered "stealthing" the bay?

You can use one of the bay plates from your case, set the drive back a small amount, and with a little filing and tweaking, you can get the bay to completely vanish into the front of the case. It will look like you just have no drive at all.

You will need to eject from within windows though, unless you rig it up so you can push on the corner of the plate and press the button underneath.

I saw a how-to thread on the stalth mod, but I wanted to keep my stock button.

I was thinking about doing the stealth mod on my 650d, but it won't work with the way I currently have the other 3 drive bays setup (I modded them by adding a front mesh/dust filter)

The only think I think I would have changed with your mod, is that I would of sprayed it instead of hand painting (if you could find a close enough match). I would assume that a military green for model tanks would be a really close match.
