Oooold computer - would upgrading graphics card enable me to play BF3/BF4?

Hi all,

I've got an older rig. Ancient, by computer terms. P35 DFI Lanparty board, Q6600 @ 3.0ghz, 8gigs of DDR2 , and a corsair 650w PSU backing it all up. My graphics card is an 8800gts 512mb. I would like to be able to play BF3, and obviously BF4 when it comes out. Obviously, upgrading my entire system is seriously needed. The problem is, I've got a year and a half left of school, and when the semesters are going, I have practically zero time to game. It'd be a waste of money to build an entire new system, because it'd be outdated by the time I could really appreciate/use it.

So, the question is, would throwing in a more modern graphics card allow me to play BF3/BF4? I'm obviously not expecting max settings. Low/Medium would be expected, more towards the medium side (but I honestly don't even know if medium is possible?)

I was thinking something along these lines, as I don't want to drop a ton of money into a card that is basically a bandaid on an ancient system.

Any input/opinions is appreciated.

Thanks!

If you game on high resolution (like 1080p & above), you won't feel a big difference by upgrading the CPU/Mobo/Mem with the 650 Boost from your current setup except maybe in a select few titles.

However, your sig rig is not half-bad. Just get a decent cooler, OC the CPU a bit more and enjoy med settings in BF3 with decent FPS.
You'll notice a huge difference from the 8800GTS.
You could also consider this card for a little more @ 199$.

I used to play bf3 on high settings with a Q6600@3.4, 4gb ram and a mildly overclocked GTX 460, so a 650Ti should do you fine as long as you're playing at 1080. Although i'd forget the 650Ti and go for a 7850. It's $5 cheaper after the rebate and will beat the nvidia card hands down. The CPU may be a bit of a bottle neck yes, but you'll get a massive jump in performance with a gpu upgrade without having too upgrade everything else.

Upgrading to a new graphics card would definitely give you much better gaming performance. Can't say about BF4 but BF3 and other current titles should be totally playable with that kind of setup.

Thanks for the all input! I'll look in to the 7850. I've honestly never used anything but Nvidia, and pretty much exclusively EVGA ones. Is Sapphire a relatively reputable company? Also, in terms of CUDA cores vs. stream processors...are those different names for basically the same thing?

I figure someone would have mentioned it, but from the research I've done, am I correct in the fact that a PCI 3.0 card will work fine in a PCI 1.0 slot?

Basically there are no "PCI-E 3.0" cards. Even the fastest cards on the market don't really get bandwidth starved on a PCI-E x16 2.0 slot.

And yes everything form PCI-E x8 1.0 to PCI-E x16 3.0 is all cross compatible. The only difference is the available band with on the said slot.

An PCI-E x16 1.0 is roughly the same speed as a PCI-E x8 2.0 and a PCI-E x16 2.0 is about the same as a PCI-E x16 3.0.

To put it shortly. A GTX 650Ti will work and not be limited by a PCI-E x16 1.0 slot.

That's not ancient. i recently acquired a pentium 3 system that looks like new inside the case. no dust, or anything. i think it runs at .987ghz with 2 sticks of 128mb sd ram.

I misremembered, and actually checked my old order history from newegg (2008, yikes.) I actually only have 4gigs of PC1000 DDR2. Is that going to bottleneck me? They still sell the exact set I have...though it's 70$ for DDR2, which is sort of painful.

Thanks, again!
