Expensive network cards vs cheaper network cards, any difference?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new networking card. I found out my AWUS036H is capping my speeds to about 15mbps vs +35mbps on my Nexus 4 and up to 65mbps on my brother's Macbook pro. I've been looking around and I see a wide variety of wireless cards.

What I'm trying to figure out if there is a difference between TP-LINK TL-WN951N ($30) vs ASUS PCE-AC66 ($90) in terms of speeds that are practical in my situation. I really don't care about features, I really only care that I'm taking full advantage of my internet connection. Comcast tells me I have 50mbps down and about 10mbps up.

My computer specs are in sig and I am using a WD My Net N900 router and a Motorola SB6120 modem. Please recommend any other products if there any. Want to spend around $40, but if spending $90 is THAT much better, I'd be willing. Thanks for the info in advance =D

The PCE-AC66 is for 802.11ac "gigabit" WiFi. If you don't at least have an AC-capable router/WAP, then this will be a waste of money.

TP-LINK TL-WN951N does wireless N 300mbps while the ASUS PCE-AC66 uses the new AC standard can go up to 1750mbps.

Your router only does 900mbps... so no need to get an AC adapter

Got a couple questions, does more distance decrease wifi speeds (10 ft, no walls vs 40 ft ,3 walls)?

Any website that will tell me about all these different types on wireless connections? I'm not to clear on all these types and such.

I'm just putting this out there for PyreSpirit to consider. The downside to adapters like this is that their performance is highly dependent upon where your actual PC is located and how it's positioned in relation to your WAP.

I have an AC66U and the PCE-AC66, but I probably wouldn't have gotten either if I couldn't have an adapter with detachable antennas/extension cables.

The more distance and obstructions between your PC and WAP, the more performance is degraded. Also, "noise makers" like Bluetooth devices, microwaves, etc. also negatively affect WiFi performance if you're using the 2.4GHz band.

You could just buy a USB adapter with a long USB cable if you want to position your adapter to a better spot...
