Buying tomorrow, please evaluate

Thread Starter
I'm considering ordering this tomorrow evening (after work)

Seeing my sig rig, do you think I will be happier with this upgrade or a Xbox 360 (my current choices)

Feel free to suggest changes, I prefer Newegg (hate tiger direct)

Thanks in advance,

Cravin

They look to be some nice updates. They only question I have is this. First, are you going to be completely replacing the Ram you currently have (the 2X512) with the 1X1024, or are you adding the 1X1024. If you are adding in the 1 gig stick understand that your ram will not be able to run in dual channel any longer, and as such, you will see a performance hit (though I would rather have more ram). I would go with the Opteron 165, save you some money, and seem to overclock better more consistently, but thats just me. Personally, I would see if I couldnt sell those 2X512 and get yourself a DC kit.

PS. 360

I do not condone torrents, but there are torrents of "freeware" that will rival and defeat the cost base of the xbox games.

I do alot of "home vids" that would see a better rate with the dual core.

The 165 is like $30 at best cheaper, worth the diff?

Also I was ADDING the RAM, should I buy 2 x 1 gb or can I use all 3 together( 1x 1gb + 2 x 512)? Why can i not use it in DDR?

instead of the western digital 320 gb for 89.99 you can pick up a seagate 320 gb perpendicular recording drive for 79.99 i think.

My brother has a 360, and I'd love to have it for the games, but the advantage of upgrading a PC and having games + versatility has me tempted

What shoudl I know (if I don't know I can't make a informed decision)

Yes, the 165 has proven to be a better overclocker then the 170. Assuming you will be overclocking it, I would go with the 165. If you are not going to overclock, or dont want to overclock it much, then you could do the 170 for the higher multi. I would say put the $30 saved towards a Dual Channel 2X1024 kit of ram.

Now then, when it comes to the ram. In order to run ram in Dual Channel you must have 2 sticks of ram, that are the exact same size and speed. And because Dual Channel requires two Dimm slots, you cannot have two 512 sticks and one 1 gig stick. You *could* go with four 512, however, that is not usually recommended, as the memory controller on AMD's does not like all 4 ram slots being full (which manifests itself in having to run ram at 2T timings and looser timings overall.)

Lastly, if I am not mistaken, the benefits of perpendicular recording are lower seek times because the information is stored closer together on the platters. It will also allow of vastly larger amounts of storage on disks later one.

Do you guys think there is anything I should add/delete to be happy with my rig ?
