The inherent issue with the Dual Shock 3 and older controllers is that the original design was based off a controller that was designed for a D-Pad input ONLY. You see how the D-Pad is right at the ideal thumb area? The first dual shock analogue added the thumbsticks as almost an afterthought in terms of placement. The D-Pad didn't really change it's location.
The Xbox controller on the other hand was initially designed where the thumbstick was meant to be the primary input method. That's why the left thumbstick is where the Dual Shock's D-Pad is located. It's amazing that Sony just doesn't seem to want to let go of the D-Pad when almost every game uses the thumbsticks as the primary input. They should really design a controller around the Thumbsticks while still having access to the D-pad just like the Xbox's original design philosophy.
