[ TB ] Xbox One: Our Hopes and Fears

Until last Wednesday afternoon, Microsoft’s biggest problem wasn’t any single aspect of their upcoming Xbox One console. It’s how they were talking to consumers.

Every word out of Don Mattrick’s mouth made Microsoft sound more and more like a lumbering, tone-deaf, but well-intentioned giant, stepping on buildings and people, all the while asking “Why is everyone running away?” All the noise coming from that side of Microsoft confused the issues surrounding the Xbox One itself.

What should we be looking forward to? What’s really, actually worrisome? What questions still remain to be answered?

What Worries Us

When I wrote this last week, this section was much longer. That was before Microsoft backed off on the DRM policies they’d announced before and during E3. The Xbox as it’d been presented was rife with problems. License transfer issues, problems with territorial availability and the looming monster of the required Internet connection made the Xbox One a difficult pill to swallow. With the recent change, most of those questions are gone, leaving just a few concerns that are much less deeply-rooted.

Meh. With how almost every single game for the thing appears on Halo I see no reason to touch a Xbox one

I agree with the article. The biggest mistake that Microsoft has made has been talking to us consumers like we're idiots. When I read the comment they made basically saying, "Oh you want an offline machine? The Xbox 360 is an offline machine. Buy that and shut up." I was pretty disappointed in Microsoft. I've supported this move to Windows 8, which gets a lot of hate but it really is a lot faster than any other OS. Some may not like the touch based UI and I can understand that, but it's certainly not another Vista. I also have a Windows Phone 8 and absolutely love it. I have supported Microsoft, not because I like the company a lot, but because they've made good products. But I will not be buying an XBox One. I don't appreciate being talked to like I'm an old Grandma refusing to get with the times if I want to take my Xbox offline and play a single player game.

The saddest part about it all is that I think they have some good ideas mixed in with all this stuff. They just failed to show anyone any reason WHY they would benefit from all the new policies. Whether that would've been Steam-like sales by going all digital or the perks of the family sharing features, they haven't given anyone any reason NOT to hate on the console.

one thing I haven't seen much of, rather any of, is how kinect 2.0 is going to be used in games. besides the whole used game drm and online check-in thing, the xbox one's game library does look better than the PS4's. I had alot of time to think things over, and while Sony took attention off their own weak exclusive game line-up with the used game video (that stealth announced a sub for online play) they are in my sights now. the holiday line-up is the weakest of not just the next gen consoles, but of every platform besides Sony's own vita and the wii (NOT the WiiU). the Xbox one, Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU and PC all have better exclusive content coming this holiday season and into at least the first half of 2014. killzone is not a heavy weight franchise by far and certainly isn't a must have or a system seller. with the best 3rd party titles like Watch Dogs, TW3, BF4, The Division, Titanfall (not on any Sony platform), MGS5, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Dark Souls 2 and more coming out for nearly every other platform, that will create some pressure to get out first party games to compete and honestly their very best first party efforts are coming ONLY on the PS3 this year. the most interesting PS4 title I've seen s far is Infamous: Second Son, which afaik, isn't a launch game. anyway, Microsoft still has a bunch of things to iron out and some things that they need to communicate better to the public about this system before launch. at least the game line-up looks good so far. just my thoughts.

I really couldn't disagree more. The DRM issue had been rumored for months, it's not something they could sweep under the rug with good PR. People were waiting for their stance on this specific issue, and as soon as people found out they were doing it, it was going to be the primary focus of consumers no matter how PR tried to spin it.

Yea, I didn't agree with that statement either.

Microsoft didn't start talking to us like idiots until we raised the issue with very specific "features" the console had..
