Self publishing on the PS4 + The Socom franchise

As we all know, the ps4 will allow indie studios to publish their own games and not pay tens of thousands to update them either. With crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter, fans can choose to support original titles that many publishers would be too hesitant to touch. No longer do indie games have to be basic side scrollers with a fancy art direction, a full 3d title to rival AAA franchises can be funded. You can see the possibility of this with Kick starter funded titles like Planetary annihilation, star citizen, or Takedown. Due to the nature of the hardware on next gen consoles, we could see many of these titles be easily ported over to consoles for our enjoyment. This is a new precedent for the gaming industry pertaining to consoles.

I think Sony could have a large advantage vs Microsoft with this capability. This can already be seen with the H-Hour: World's Elite Kickstarter that is up currently, one of the first to promise a digital ps4 release.
(Star citizen for example)

H-Hour is being touted as the "spiritual successor to socom I/II", both game made by the projects backer, David Sears.

I don't know if anyone missed out on this series back in the day, but it really was awesome. You don't have to a socom "vet" to enjoy what the games brought to the table.

The franchise was one of the first console games to popularize online gameplay along with voice chat. You could go into any room, and everyone would have a mic putting effort to work together as a team to win the game. There was no xp grind to prestige, cover system, regen health, perks, or kill streaks; you had your wits to give you any advantage in game over your opposition. The games could come down to the tiebreaker round and, you being the last guy left, to clutch vs 3 people. Did I mention the clan support and community? You were able to play clan matches all night simply by posting up a game in the lobby titled "8v8 now [cX*]" and have a match within minutes.
I haven't been able to play anything like this in a long time, even with counter strike. Having one life per round along with the run and gun gameplay gave the game a great balance of realism and arcade style gameplay. You could even make custom taunts to throw up, or do a victory dance over your fallen foe biggrin.gif.

Some socom 2 gameplay (Notice how you can switch camera views from third to first person at :59 seconds into the video):
Gameplay from the sluggish ps3 version of the series:
Since socom II, we've been forced to watch the series enter it's death throws and finally die, all while trying to be complacent with playing games like Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, or the endless stream of games trying to emulate them.

If you're sick of the current shooter genre like me, and want something different, I urge you to check out H-Hour. Link here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1687497632/h-hour-worlds-elite-0

So am I over analyzing the power of self-publishing on the ps4, or is it a big deal?

You aren't overanalyzing it. In fact, it is a wonderful thing that console gamers can now be introduced to some great indie games they wouldn't have a chance to get without a computer. I can't wait to see some of the games that come into the Playstation 4.

PS4 is going to be ok. I'll probably be mainly switched over to PC gaming except for H-Hour. I'm pledging $150 to that!
