Would I need to apply thermal if I took the shroud off?

If the shroud included the heatsink, yes.

Yeah I think its the power supply. Just had the pc on and it made a fffft sound then shut off. And I smells a smell . So I guess ill look what I can find ,probably get a capstone since they're cheap and I see them recommended a lot

You might be able to rma that psu.

No worries though. And as mentioned above, you might be able to RMA your PSU and get a full refund. A few years ago when I still had my old rig, my PSU made a few pop noises aswell. A few seconds later I smelled burnt plastic. Probably a capacitor that died or something like that.

well i went through troubleshooting and the only thing that wasnt checked was the PSU, so i took the casing off to check( there was a screw under the warrenty stick) but the sticker is still in place.
would that void it. but when i was looking at the psu components i didnt find anything wrong. i did send Corsair a question about this problem. hopefully they will reason with me because i havent done anything with it besides unscrewing it. everything looks fine except for the sticker just has a tiny hole in it where the screw was

Well, if the sticker is still in place and you haven't messed around with the PSU, it's not void. Good luck with RMA'ing it. smile.gif
