Intel Build Upgrade Questions

Thread Starter
I currently have my second build built (Built almost a year ago now).

Specs are:
MSI Z77 Mobo
i5 3570k @ Stock
EVGA GTX 660 (NON-TI) Standard
500 GB Sata HDD
No Name Sata DVD-RW
Raidmax PSU @ 530 watts
8GB Ram

I am currently planning some upgrades to it.

First, I want a better than stock CPU cooler. I know I will be limited in size due to my case. I currently have the CM Elite 430 case, so I am limited by that, but I am planning on upgrading to the Vengeance C70 if I need a bigger to get maximum cooling. I was thinking about getting the H100i, but again, am open to any suggestions about the BEST performance cooler. (I would like to overclock.) I would also like to get something that I can keep my current case with, but I understand that will be hard just due to the size constraints. If I have to change, I will.

Second, I want to get better graphics performance. Should I get a SECOND 660 (Non-TI) and put it in SLI, or should I get one single newer card and push my budget. (Which I can do if you guys come back with a solution for my first question that saves money). I currently have used all Nvidia, but I am willing to get an AMD/ATI GPU if it will perform better for less money.

Third, I am going to get a Samsung 840 Series Pro 128 gig SSD and Barracuda 2 TB mechanical drive. Is this the best and most cost effective solution?

Also, what other upgrades should be made in the sub $800 US price point? (I might be willing to push to $850, but no more)

Thanks, I just want to make sure I am going to get the best performance out of this before I buy it,

Before you do any upgrading or overclocking, that PSU needs to be replaced because it's a very low quality unit. Otherwise, you could be in for some trouble.

That system seems to be a rather decent system already. Just get a 650w-850w PSU and you should be set for power. Other than that, your current case looks like it could fit a Cooler Master 212+/EVO. smile.gif

As for the question about getting a second GTX 660. If you get another card and do SLI, your system will only utilize the vram from one card and simply will not be as efficient as running one card. You will definitely see a performance increase but be advised that it will not run your system to it's full potential.

I'd look to get a GTX 770 instead of SLI.

Ok, what PSU should I go with in my budget? Also, what is your opinion on my other questions regarding upgrades?

Ok, I was thinking about selling the 660 and getting a better single card. Best AMD/ATI or Nvidia card that I could get in that budget if I sold the 660? Also, would the 212 be better than the H100i? I have found that it can fit in my current cast in Pull Only mode.

The GTX 770/780. The 212 is an excellent cooler and has been around for a long time. If your case can accommodate the H100i, go for it.

I can't recommend just one PSU. However, I will say that for your upgrade plans, any good quality-made 550W PSU is enough. I mean, that's if you add a second non-Ti GTX 660 or if you go with a single very powerful video card like maybe the GTX 780. That's not to say that a good quality-made 550W PSU would be the minimum, but that it would cover you.

Anything "bigger" is a waste of money unless you wanted to have two powerful video cards.
