USB Question

Thread Starter
Currently I have a logitech c525 webcam. I want to set up multiple ones for my work so I can access them via web and my phone, but wondering if anyone knew about usb extensions.

The logitech webcam comes with a 3 feet wiring, but of course in certain areas I would need to extend it even further. I have ordered a 15 feet usb extension from newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812816075&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

but when I plug both into my computer for a trial, the only smooth setting I can get is on 320 x 176. on higher settings, even for 640 x 480, it lags and I get about .5 fps.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how to power a usb webcam properly?

I know usb tends to lose it's power easily even after 10 feet, but wondering if anyone else has found a viable mod.

Thanks~

It's possible to get adapters that will amplify the signal. Now these probably aren't the best prices and I don't know here your from so they could be the wrong currency, but at least it gives you an idea of what to look for. http://www.ebuyer.com/262711-cables-to-go-usb-superbooster-extender-kit-81621 thumb.gif

That's a Newegg link for you. The description should clarify how it works but the general idea is that you plug on end in to your computer, connect it via Ethernet to the other end and connect your device to that. Says it works up to 150 feet.

Hope I could help biggrin.gif

Really sorry to triple post, but upon further inspection that extender is only compliant with USB 1.1.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812228422

Same idea but works with USB 2.0 and is priced even more extortionately.

Sorry again. tongue.gif

a usb 2.0 extender is going to be very expensive.
and I'm not sure you will be happy with only 1.1 compliance

If you can, try using a "powered USB hub" ($10-$20) every 15 ft (obviously the drawback is you need power for it).
Yes, it would seem we are both hard pressed to find a cost effective solution, though the idea of powered hubs is a good one
