NOTE: THIS IS A BETA, EXPECT POSSIBLE ISSUES

"The best part is my Start screen customizations, apps, and files get synced across all my Windows 8.1 PCs and tablets, which is awesome," writes LeBlanc. "If I change my Start screen, install new apps, pin new apps to my Start screen on one PC - that all gets synced to my other PCs."
The Windows Store has also received a redesign, and beyond obligatory updates to some Windows 8 apps, Microsoft is planning to announce new applications sometime today. You can download the Windows 8.1 preview right now from the Windows Store, but as always, be sure to back up all your data before installing. As an additional note, the preview is not available for Windows RT users at this time.
Download and install the 16mb prep installer. After that, it'll restart and configure your machine. Then go to the Windows Store App, right on the front. 1.95gb download!
EDIT: If you download it through MS's store, use this key NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F
If you get an error "The update is not applicable to your computer" try this

==== FOUND A FIX ====
1. Place and rename the MSU file in an easily accessible place, e.g. C:\8preview\preview.msu
2. open command prompt in administrator mode.
3. Type: Expand -F:* c:\8preview\preview.msu C:\8preview\
4. Type: DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\8preview\Windows8-RT-KB2849636-x64.cab
Replace the "x64.cab" on the end of step 4 with -x86.cab" for 32-bit versions and "-arm.cab" for RT versions.
Your text will be corrupted in the Windows 8 store for the 8.1 download page on restart, but the Windows 8.1 preview should download once the servers become less overloaded.
It wont install on my PC or Samsung Ativ700T (both x64 pro editions, says the update is not applicable for my system), but it is currently installing fine on my Lenovo Yoga 11.
According to Microsoft, you need to reinstall all your desktop apps after final 8.1 hits. I guess I'm gonna skip the Preview and wait for the final release.
I like this update, making already good OS even better.
Can anyone confirm having to reinstall all apps when going from public preview to final? I heard this about the MILESTONE preview (which didn't require app reinstalls upon installation)...but not public. Nothing official anyway.
Would be pretty "interesting" if people were led to update to a ticking time bomb that after a few months demanded money from them (without at least telling them that was what they were going to do first)
Meh, I wish they made a start button that actually was somehow on screen in the desktop so you didn't have to go back to metro....I guess start8/startisback/classic shell are all still very relevant.
