Microsoft lost some PC users to gain share of the tablet market segment, It can't be a win-win situation all the time.

Sure they could. Not sure why some people believe this. All they had to do with make it optional so people who want it can use it. That is a real win-win.

You know you can try it out in VirtualBox / Virtual PC before actually installing it.

Also I would grab the ISO.

I am sticking with Windows 7 x64 simply because most professional applications aren't smoothed out in Windows 8 yet.

If you just use your computer for games , web browsing , image editing then Windows 8 is better due to lighter overhead from Aero.smile.gif

Right now there's only two real reasons to use Windows: Games and Windows only professional applications. Basically things you can't run on a tablet , Mac OS X, or Linux OS.

Web browsing / videos / photos? You don't need a computer let alone Windows.

There are a bunch of features removed from the Start Screen vs Start Menu. One of the biggest ones is jumplists. Another is recently used programs, but that is brought back in 8.1. Another is folder navigation in the all apps menu, which is necessary for professional applications that fill up the all programs menu with PDF help files. For example, Comsol has something like 10 introduction and 20 user's guide PDF files that clutter up the all apps menu.

Been in Windows 7

But in Windows 8 you need to be in Desktop mode for it.

Since I run Firefox in Private mode 100% of the time this is essential. Also being able to use recently used documents (MS Office) from the taskbar shortcut icon is also a plus.

How is it off topic? W8.1 was suppose to be in response to customer feedback, but MS purposely only gave back the Start button because they STILL wanted to try and herd people into a tablet UI environment. Discussion of the continued lack of Start menu is very much on topic no matter how you dislike the discussion. Again, if you don't like what I say, either ignore my post or me. I am not being uncivil and starting anything with anyone unlike some people.

Everything working fine for me. I did have to reinstall my video drivers, but still used the 13.5 beta I had before the update, just had to reinstall it. Wanted to make sure it would work before trying the 8.1 preview driver. Probably won't fool with the preview driver since the "old" one works after a reinstall. Didn't even uninstall the old one, just installed over and it worked fine.

The changes are nice, but not anything so huge that I couldn't go back to normal 8 if I had to. The only one I really would miss would be the straight to desktop and even that isn't that important to me. Always better to have more options than less regardless.

Anyone know what happens when this releases? will these versions with the supplied product key stop working?
