Gigabyte 970A-UD3 or 990FXA-UD3

Thread Starter
Looking to get a motherboard for a FX 6300. I plan to get a 8 core steamroller CPU next year. Which of the 2 is better for pure overclocking?

I'm reading bad things about the 990FXA-UD3, especially the rev 3 model with UEFI.

The 990 chipset is much better overall, IMHO. I am running the 990FXA-UD3 and am loving it...but I'm running Rev 1.1

If you are going to be getting a premium CPU, then you also should get a premium motherboard.

The main problems with the UD3 is that the 8 cores can push it beyond its limits. I spent $60 in aftermarket coolers for mine and should have spent that money on a stronger mobo.

How about the Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0? Would that be ok for overclocking a 8 core Piledriver (and future steamroller)?

I have heard nothing bad about ASUS. Their better boards even have a stiffener/heatsink on the back side of the VRMs.
Looking at a picture of it, that thing has heat sinks on its heat sinks and should be good.

I'd just like to warn you against the GA-990FXA-UD3. Especially Revision 3.0 as there are numerous issues with this board. Just look in the Gigabyte 990FX club and you will see.

Take a look at the MSI 990fx GD80 v2. Since its their actual "flagship" board for that socket its not going to catch on fire like their lower end 970 gd65 boards do when overclocked (or when running 8 cores). It has really nice UEFI (better than the asus boards imo) and plenty of features to back it up. It doesnt look like butts like the Asus Sabertooth which is in the same price bracket ($170~).

ATM if you buy it on newegg it also comes with a free set of 2x 4GB of 1600 crucial Ballisticks low profile/voltage ram as well.

970a-ud3 and 990fxa-UD3 are exactly the same layout. The only difference between the two are the amount of PCI-E X16 slots. The 970a only has one x16 but then has another one running at x4. The 990FX has 4 PCI-E X16 slots that run at different speeds depending on how many graphics cards you have installed.

There are NO differences in the MOSFET layout, the cap / choke quality or any nonsense like that. The only time the chokes change are with the 990FXA-UD5 and the UD7.
