Quiet 140mm fan for PSU replacment.

Thread Starter
Hello!

Looking for a decent but quiet 140mm fan to replace the one in my XFX 750w PSU. The fan inside the PSU has developed an annoying whirling noise simply from age as it's now about 2 and a half years old, so looking to replace it as it's the loudest thing in my case.

The fan needs to be 140mm as it'll be the easiest size to fit inside the PSU chasis, only requiring drilling new mounting holes or just glueing it in. I read somewhere that the fan inside the PSU has an airflow of 84CFM @ 12v, so the new fan must have the same rating or better to make sure it doesn't overheat but be as quiet as possible. I'll either rewire the new fan to the 2 pin connection used inside the PSU, connect it directly to my mobo or molex to run it at 12v constantly provided it's quiet enough, or connect it to my fan controller and flip it to 12v whenever under load like I do anyway.

So looking for some recommendations that don't break the bank too much. Spending £20 for a fan in a £70 PSU seems pointless. Also I'm in the UK if you post any retailer links.

Thanks in advance.

I can't really give you any advice on that other than, and seriously now, MAKE SURE THAT IT'S DISCHARGED! Lemme tell you, touching a loaded PSU capacitor ain't a story that your gonna be able to tell thumb.gif

Cougar and Prolimatech make some decent 140mm fans. Prolimatech's is very slim and low noise, PRO-USV14.

I've opened and cleaned PSU's before so know the risks involved and the precautions to take. But thanks anyway, never hurts repeat sound advice every time someone mentions opening a PSU before they become frazzled.

The Prolimatech looks good, specs fit the requirements, I'll look into them.

I would also make sure it's a ball bearing fan. I had some nice sleeve fans on a radiator that wore out and stopped really fast because they where pushing air up. I since then bought a ton of ball bearing fans .

If you want quiet, the best option is Enermax T.B.Silence.
I have one of the fixed RPM 140mm. models in my Corsair TX650 V2, running on 12V. It is dead silent and even at load my PSU is still cold to the touch.

If you want a quiet cheap fan, then look into Antec Twocool 140mm Fan £7.37, was reviewed by SPCR recently and came on top in performance/noise, but at 1200rpm is 55cfm. If you want close to your specs, then consider Phanteks PH-F140 £16.95 its rated 78CFM, and was the winner of the frist SPCR 140mm round up, just be careful as the one i linked is the old version, and the one reviewed was the newest, you can tell the difference out of the tri support vs the 4point skeleton of the fan, check the pics to see what i mean.
