About 1/3 of my music is lossless, some mpeg4 and the rest high quality mp3 (if there is such a thing) and you're right, the differences can be remarkable.
Controlling the volume via the TV certainly keeps things easy.

After fiddling around with the guy at Guitar Center, it turned out the cables were low quality and picked up unwanted noise. After upgrading the cables (not cheap) there was hardly any sound coming through my speakers when idling.

I'm positive it was the speakers. I did my best to isolate the problem and it was constant, regardless of sources or cables being used. I even used different wall outlets as well as Power Surge protector and UPS. Many users and reviewers report this issue with this particular make and model (examples here and here). It's just a matter of luck whether one gets the older version or the revised edition as they are not marked and there is no way to tell the difference. I already sent them back for a refund.

On a side note, here is a pretty cool site for computer audio I found in case anyone is interested.

In fact, that's exactly what I'm thinking smile.gif I'll go to Guitarcenter first to see if I can listen to some Adams, if not I'll be going for another pair of Shift A2's. There are other very intriguing speaker choices out there, but like I said I'm unwilling to pay for return shipping should I not like a particular pair. I got lucky with the Shift A2's that the seller agreed to pay for return shipping. thumb.gif
