Trying to make a linux server(s), need some help

Thread Starter
I put together two computers made of 5 old computers and I am hoping to make a home server using lubuntu or ubuntu (ideally lubuntu since it is a lighter OS). It's primary purpose will be for data storage, torrenting, and streaming.

Server 1 has 3 drives (320GB, 250GB, and 160GB), but I'm not sure how I should partition them to optimize the space available. I've looked for guides and found this: http://lifehacker.com/5919558/turn-an-old-computer-into-a-networked-backup-streaming-or-torrenting-machine-with-ubuntu which I feel has left out some detail in the partitioning aspects. Any advice or links to a more thorough guide would be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore, is there someway to link the two servers through a network so they act as one? Or is it better to just make 2 separate servers?

If you're worried about footprint, then I'd recommend doing a minimal install of Debian. However that mean that you'll need to be comfortable with working in the command line. Failing that, stick with Lubuntu.

Traditionally, creating RAIDs (where you use multiple disks as one storage pool) requires disks of a similar size. However there are new ways too pool mismatched disk sizes disks together - though I'm not the best authority on this kind of pool, one piece of software I've heard that does this is SnapRAID: http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/faq.html

Are you saying you want both servers to do the same thing but distribute the workload between them? That's not really practical given your specs. Frankly, you could probably get away with just the one server to do this.

Can you also elaborate on what you mean when you say "streaming"? Are you basically just playing the content from an SMB (Windows-compatible shared folder) or did you mean proper streaming via DLNA (and if the latter - are you planning to transcode your content?)

Also, what content are you looking to stream? Audio, video, both?
