Anyway open source drivers strong enough for gaming would be prerewuisite for me upgrading my gpu again.

Actually, I would see the video card turn off because the fan should stop spinning. The monitor's always off and the computer is only Folding on the CPUs.

Do many people here run the open source driver versus the AMD FGLRX drivers? With Steam I had to run the proprietary drivers to get things to work. Not sure this kernel update is really going to have much impact on me. Or maybe I'm missing something.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Valve's kind of recent news with the steam box and linux etc.

No need to go Linux only. Valve appears to be attempting not to favor one OS, but instead to maximize their customer base and go for all three major OS's. Remember, PC doesn't mean Windows Computer, it means Personal Computer, and they all use x86/x64 chips and interface with a mouse and keyboard. The only thing Valve has to do to dethrone M$ is to announce that all new titles on Steam must launch with working installs on Winblows, MacOS, and Linux. That's it, they don't need to favor, they just need to force the option and the market will reconfigure itself accordingly. Most PC users don't do anything on their systems that requires proprietary software except games, which all the major and most minor titles require directX. Forcing the option of a Linux and Mac install with every game will basically drag OpenGL into the dominant api spot, unless M$ decides that they have to open directx to other platforms, which will accomplish the same thing for all practical purposes. Games are the lynchpin for the success of a desktop OS, and Valve controls the games now. Valve alone is in position to make Linux a gaming OS, and that will be all that is required to make it finally competitive in the desktop market.

Gabe Newell is set to keynote this year's Linux devcon and my guess is all that stuff that Valve didn't announce at E3 these past few years will be rolled out there.

I use the open source driver for both my laptop (legacy and unsupported x200m chip) and my desktop (HD6850). The open source driver works much better in both cases under almost any circumstance, except some games under WINE and power management. Proper power management for the radeon driver is more than awesome.
