So lightning took out my friend's motherboard. Oddly it took out JUST that. To be a nice friend I am letting him use my new motherboard, since I still have an AM3 board somewhere.

This is where things get interesting. My board is an ASRock 4+1 phase, no VRM cooling. So I decided, while I'm at it lets see what this board can do with overclocking. It throttles the VRMs at a certain temp, and does it quite well, so I'm not too worried. I just kept lowering the vcore, .025 each run it throttled, till I got 10 runs on IBT without throttling.

The interesting thing is, I got an extremely low vcore compared to his old motherboard. It wouldn't run at these voltages, I'm currently on 1.2 with vdroop it's 1.56! The core is at a meager 4.0GHz but at 1.56 (HW reported, Bios set to 1.2 +50mv or whatever). It generally sits at 1.216, highest is 1.224, average is 1.206 in HWMonitor. I'm assuming it probably sits around 1.2-1.56 on load. Which is astounding, as the Gigabyte board would sit around 1.3-1.35 on load.

So what does this mean? ASRock has better components? I'm very curious now as to how low I can set this vcore and run IBT on quick 10run sessions to get decent stability at 4.0GHz.... I'm even more curious as to how fast this chip can go on low voltages, something I've never seen talked about. What is the highest overclock for the lowest voltage. I'm now interested.
