Is there an improvement over a $400 770 by just adding $100 more?

Thread Starter
I was told by kids in 4chan that I'm a fool for getting an i7 and I should get an i5 and give the extra 100 for a better GPU. : )

Let's entertain that wisdom of 4chan trolling though: Let's assume I'm doing it, is there a card that will be a great improvement by adding 100 more to a 770? Because as far I see it's the third best card and then it jumps to the overpriced - for me - higher ends.

In general, what they try to say is correct. if you implement the idea on other situations/cases its a fairly true and good thing being a gamer.

in your specific case, i doubt there is a better card than the GTX 770 at this moment for $100 more.

stick with the 770. its a beast card that my brother has smile.gif

They might be eating those words in a year or two if multi-threading really takes off...

The idea is sound. Buying an i5, and saving that $100 to go to a 780 would have given you greater performance in gaming. If that $100 was the entirety of your budget, then of course, there isn't much more you could have done.

Regardless, the 770 is great, and why settle for an i5 when an i7 is literally two numbers larger? Congrats on the build!

As other people have mentioned, you will probably like the extra threads in the future, I would stick with the i7 + 770 any day.

I personally would have got the i5 and put the 100$ to getting a GTX780. That 2GB VRAM and 256bit memory bus is going to start to choke very quickly on the GTX 770!

Yeah, I would have grabbed an i5 and 780. But not exactly a $100 difference.

That's assuming it's solely for single GPU gaming

Everyone is basically right, in the same situation I would also go i5 and either 780 or probably cf 7950's for about $500ish if I wanted to spend less than a 780.

As a side note: Don't be disappointed. The 770 is a great card, and SLI is always a possibility. Getting an i7 is a good choice, as you cant just buy a second.
