Realtek ALC1150 or Xonar DX?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Upgrading my PC, my old setup included a Xonar DX, my new 1 the motherboard an Asrock Z87 Extreme 4 comes with the latest Realtek ALC1150, any ideas if this is now superior to the DX or should I disable the 1150 and stick with the DX?

I use my PC for gaming.

This is the bumph from the blurb....I have no idea myself.

Including 7.1 CH HD audio with Realtek ALC1150 audio codec, 115dB SNR DAC with Differential Amplifier, TI® 5532 Premium Headset Amplifier which supports up to 600 ohm headphones, cap less Direct Drive technology, EMI shielding cover, PCB isolate shielding and support for DTS Connect.

Xonar DX.

This shouldn't even be a question, a dedicated sound card with a purpose built DSP, a proper output stage with dedicated low noise op-amps and decent filtering shouldn't ever be compared to a small piece of a motherboard dedicated to house an entry level audio DSP that makes use of a single chip amplifier, driver and impedance coupler.

I'm not saying that the DX is a high end audio card in any sort of form, but it is leagues beyond any motherboard integrated audio you can find smile.gif

At least they are trying to improve the onboard audio^^
I hope someone makes a review on the new onboard audio solutions, 898 had a decent review with dx/dg/etc.

Xonar DX is much better than any onboard sound.

Thanks DX it is,

Reason it's a question is that it is a new codec/technology on a new chipset Z87, I had no idea if they had made advances that made this new technology use the new Haswell chip or something, thus rather than guess I thought I would ask.

Well, Realtek has made an improvement with the ALC1150 but it's still quite a ways from the DX. I'd rank the ALC1150 about nearly as good as a DGX.

Throw your old sound card into trash can: new beats old every time. Sure, Intel CPU can easily dedicate 0.01% of its capabilities to sound processing; the sound bytes can effortlessly travel via SPDIF, HDMI or any other means to your receiver, which would reproduce it to perfection. The weak link is the last stage of analog sound reproduction: speakers, room modes, and your ear.

/facepalm doh.gif

Stop giving garbage advice because you got a licking at Head-Fi from people who actually know what the heck they are talking about unlike you. Especially since you don't understand what a sound card actually does in a system.

Just because you are shown to be flat out wrong in the ZxR thread doesn't give you the ability to say bull**** in someone asking for help.

Prepare for a thread with a lot of opinions and 95% of the people never using both to give you a real comparison. You are better off trying the 1150 and seeing if it meets your standards vs. throwing down a chunk of change for a new card just because some jabronies have an opinion but no experience.

He already have the Xonar so when you get your new MD, try it disabled (xonar) then try it enabled and see which one you prefer.
