gaming is another hobby so if i can get a good gaming rig with good hardware the option to do my other hobby as well on the same rig would pay off gratefully just needed the advise smile.gif !

Glad I could help. Monitor upgrade to 1440p does make a difference. In terms of 6GB or 3GB VRAM, I honestly don't think it's worth £128 extra for 3GB more VRAM even at 1440p. You might get capped on the memory, but 3GB is enough for most cases and I don't think any related drop in FPS would be substantial enough to justify the much higher price. FWIW, I'm planning to upgrade my GPU as well (1600p monitor) and I'm looking at 3GB models.

In terms of 7970 vs 7950, price dependent, £82-92 isn't pocket change (if it is for you, then problem solved biggrin.gif). Did a quick check of a couple Sapphire 7950 OC Vapor X reviews, and it looks like with both cards at stock speeds, the 7950 OC trails a 7970 (non GHz version from what I can tell) by 10%12% in most cases at 1600p. With a good OC, the 7950 beats a stock 7970, but I doubt that's the case for a 7970GHz (certainly not for a 7970 with a decent OC). Also, for a couple of games tested at 1600p, minimum frame rates for both cards were around 27-33 or so. 1440p FPS will obviously be a little better than 1600p, but that's still cutting it too close for consistent quality gaming IMO.

For that reason, given your plans to go to 1440p in the near future, I think the 7970GHz edition warrants the higher price. NOTE: I noticed that the card is "on sale" and about £12 more than the Sapphire HD 7970 OC BOOST 3GB. If the price difference was much more than that, then I'd go for the cheaper 7970 OC boost. You're going to overclock anyway.

One last thing. There's still the matter of the 8970/8950 lurking on the sidelines. This is exactly why I'm frustrated with the lack of official AMD news concerning these two cards. If you knew that the 8970/8950 were scheduled to be released "sometime in Q3" or "late Q4", etc., you could make an informed decision as to whether it's worth waiting or not. At least for me, 2-3 month wait is worthwhile. 4 or more months wait is not.

GL & let me know what you decide.

Hey didn't want to start another thread for this so i'll ask here.
Should i go with the SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100351VXSR Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB at $370
OR a 770 at $400
I'm comfortable with overclocking and i'll be using a 1080p monitor

get a sapphire hd 7970 oc (1 ghz) and overclock it. for USD 330 its a very good deal. this card has unlocked voltage. on average overclocks to 1100 - 1150 mhz.
