I'm building a FM2 rig with a A10-6800k APU and I have read that the largest video card it will crossfire with is the 7750 series cards. The swiftech site shows the base change to fit the 7900 series cards.

Do you think I would still need to change the base for the 7750 cards?

I also sent this question into Swiftech...

Thanks again

Have you ordered the A10 yet? If not, I would wait for the new Kaveri APUs that release later this year. The Trinity and Richland APUs are basically a fancy athlon CPU with integrated graphics, the Kaveri APUs use the Steamroller cores which are the successor to the piledriver CPUs.

Edit: It looks like the Richland APUs use the Piledriver cores actually, my mistake. Anyways, I would still wait. If you haven't ordered them yet, wait for the Kaveri APUs, they are going to be a massive step forward compared to current APUs.

Have not purchased any parts yet, just getting all my ducks in a row before hand. BUt after upgrading my wifes rig I have this bad itch to upgrade mine also.

Even if I do go with the A10-6800k couldn't I grab a Kaveri when it does release and just drop it in the MB? Thats if they dont make a socket change for the Kaveri's..

Thanks

I doubt they'd be changing the socket.

NOPE! Kaveri CPUs require an FM2+ socket motherboard. They feature a CRAP ton of upgrades over the current APU design, the most notable is they add GDDR5 memory on board, while retaining the Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access or hUMA that gives the APUs such good integrated graphics performance. It's also rumored that they can Hybrid-Crossfire with higher end graphics cards compared to current APUs.

So the FM2+ socket will follow the same rule that the AM standard and AM+ sockets have had, in that FM2 processors WILL work in an FM2+ socket, but an FM2+ processor will NOT work in an FM2 socket. They are backward compatible, but not forward compatible. AMD has confirmed this.

It will use the exact same backplate, so any watercooling equipment you decide on will work with it.

Check out the link I posted. Richlands were only a minor improvement on the graphics end of the APUs over the Trinity APUs, but are MUCH better CPUs. Kaveri focuses on the VGA element, and even then uses the Steamroller cores which are the successor of the current Piledriver cores, and are planned to have a 20% better power to performance ratio.

AMD has confirmed they ARE using an upgraded socket, and said that Kaveri APUs will use an FM2+ socket.

Yup, the Kaveri APUs are looking to be a VERY nice VGA for even medium to high end computers, however; seeing as how they aren't out yet it's all speculation based on their architecture. Hopefully they don't disappoint. Your wife will probably be happy that you're waiting to upgrade your rig too. wink.gif
