Windows update issues - please help!

post #1 of 5

Hi!

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my PC due to a wish for a "fresh start". I reinstalled the usual way, formattin disks and deleting the partitions (letting windows create its own) and installing it. Everything was fine, including the first 6 updates (which needed a restart, again everything went fine) until the second bunch of updates came along. A massive 119 updates piled up for install as I turned off my computer, and though some of them took their fair share of time, they installed normally (as far as i'm aware). The problem, however, occurs when windows needs to configure the updates (that's what it said in the norwegian version anyway, as i'm norwegian. excuse any grammatical errors) as it sort of stuck on the 0% mark for a long time. Then it said that an error occured, and that any changes will be reverted. I started to wonder because of this, and tried a few more restarts with the same results. The only weird thing is that even though alle the standard windows updates (security, system updates etc.) seems to fail, all the .net framework installs works fine...

Also, this might be a bit off topic, but every time the install fails, the space taken up on the c disk by windows seems to increase with 2 gb..?

If anyone has suggestions, please respond!

Is one of the updates that is going to be installed KB2647753? If so uncheck everything else and just install that one on it's own. After you install that update by itself, you can run all the other updates and you should be fine.

oh, i'll check for that one. Thank you very, very much! f*ck, i've been so frustrated about this!

again, thanks! biggrin.gif

Edit:

Yup, I found the update, selected it, but it seems like it is already installed, as there is no option to press "install"...

How about try deleting everything in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution (all subdirectories and files but not SoftwareDistribution itself). In order to do this you will have to have the Windows Update service stopped, so before attempting to delete it open an elevated command prompt and type: net stop wuauserv , then delete all the files and then type in another elevated command prompt net start wuauserv .

@OP:

1) Install Service Pack 1 using the standalone installer from MS to reduce the number of updates that need to be installed. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842

2) Install updates after that.

3) If issues persists, use this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

4) Install updates again.
