[phoronix] Canonical Will Now Ship Mir By Default In Ubuntu 13.10

Originally Canonical was planning to ship their Mir Display Server by default in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on the desktop and in Ubuntu 13.10 still be using an X.Org Server outside of mobile devices. However, it's been announced today that with Ubuntu 13.10 they will now be using Mir by default.

Rather than pushing Mir into Ubuntu 14.04 as the first desktop release with Mir/XMir, they want to do it for 13.10, given that next year's release will be a Long-Term Support release where they must support it it on the desktop for a period of five years.

Looks like I'll be completely jumping ship from Ubuntu sooner than I though.

Why exactly?
Derivatives would probably include their own X packages by 14.04.

Being a KDE user already meant my Ubuntu installs were only borderline supported anyway. With this, basically my entire userland isn't supported. Why not go upstream to Debian (I've already got some systems running it anyway)?

With Ubuntu 13.10 for unsupported configurations, the X.Org Server will still be present.

No need to panic yet.

This could be good, X isn't exactly pretty...But what about driver support? Can you use proprietary GPU drivers with Mir?

Not yet. Nvidia and AMD have expressed reluctance in supporting Wayland, let alone Mir.

That mostly reads as "you're on your own if you don't get with our program". Any one of a dozen major distros offer much better support for X11 and will continue to offer good support for X11 after wayland becomes mainstream as wayland has made specific allowances for X11 and it's developers (who also work on X11) plan on supporting X11 for a long time to come as primary support software.

Mir (like X11 and wayland) is the platform that the GUI runs on top of.

As to the problems with X11 and how Wayland wants to solve them (and a couple comments on Mir), check out this article by one of the wayland developers (also an X developer)
