Is it worth upgrading at this point? - Page 2

If you aren't running an SSD yet, then I think that will be the single most effective "bang for your buck" upgrade in terms of visible performance difference (not gaming - but I'm sure your 6950 is fine with that res, but OS load times). It gives your rig a new lease at life. The rest of your rig (except that monitor) seem fine, an SSD will get another 2 years out of it. I'm still running an AM2 940 and everything is fine here (8GB DDR2!)

Slow loading times are a factor of a aging hard drive. As mechanical drives age they do get much slower than as fast as they were new. I got a roughly 2-3 year old Seagate in my machine, it ran 24/7 for all of them years. And I can tell you now its at least twice as slow as it was when I bought it new. I would recommend maybe looking towards buying a SSD. That will eliminate any slow loading performance regardless to what machine you put it into. The hardware in your rig is still fairly decent even for today's game titles. I personally would hold off on upgrading until Steamroller comes out. That will be AMD's first giant step forward in terms of CPU performance. They aren't expected until early 2014, tho if you start saving now you'll most likely have enough to just build an entire new rig by then. AMD HD 8000 graphics cards will be available at that time as well. So you'll be making a giant step forward if you wait until then. Tho if you buy a SSD now, you can always use it in your Steamroller machine as well. That would be the better investment among anything else imo.

Looking at your sig rig t3 that upgrade makes most sense to me, I would be suprised if it wasnt down to an aging/filling hard drive disk.

Do you have a budget/capacity in mind? I can recommend a few SSDs for you if you get stuck.

Yeah, I had to replace a WD Blue a while back. It only lasted it's warranty, but I still got it replaced from WD with a re certified WD Black (not bad - it's fast and dependable thus far)
I replaced my old drives with WD velociraptors. Those drives breathed new life into my PCs one like the OP's rig - similar specs in one of them.
I need the space, so chose 500 GB Velociraptors. smile.gif
